If only more disputes could resolve themselves so quietly.

I keep hoping something similar will happen to California, but I hear I may be waiting a while on that one. *sigh*

Yes, it is humorous, like something Dr Seuss might've written about. The connotations of that statement are, however, rather serious. This is a very real example of what will happen to humanity if we don't get our act together and stop arguing over stupid things.

BTW, is anyone else thinking this poses quite a hazzard to ships and boats? It can't be THAT far underwater, and it is now invisible.

The world is full of such reefs. They are all on shipping charts to avoid. Large ships will avoid them because of this. Smaller boats are more likely to be local to specific regions and have local knowledge of all the reefs. Even pleasure boats have depth sensors in them that beep when the clearance gets below a certain level - so they would be unlikely to hit such rocks too - unless they just suddenly jutted up from the sea bottom vertically so there was no narrowing slope to trigger a warning.

Bangladesh is practically underwater. It is impossible to draw its coastline accurately because it keeps changing.

I doubt the dispute is over, it isn't about the island but the waters, it is a bit like the Shatt al-Arab/Persian gulf border line.
