Last month Adrian Lamo, a man once hunted by the FBI, did something contrary to his nature. He picked up a payphone outside a Northern California supermarket and called the cops.

Someone had grabbed Lamo’s backpack containing the prescription anti-depressants he’d been on since 2004, the year he pleaded guilty to hacking The New York Times. He wanted his medication back. But when the police arrived at the Safeway parking lot it was Lamo, not the missing backpack, that interested them. Something about his halting, monotone speech, perhaps slowed by his medication, got the officers’ attention.

I only wish Autism Speaks and others would stop all the media attention emphasizing Asperger's Syndrome as a medical condition that only affects children. How long must ADULTS remain "invisible?"

After reading the article, I don't get why he was put in an institution for nine days.

I don't either, after all those children will grow up.

Yeah but then we aren't 'cute innocent children' anymore so no one cares. The attitude seems to be if a kid has autism, 'oh the poor little thing' if an adult DARES to have the same (which inevitably they will) then everyone's attitude changes to 'why is he/she allowed in public' and other such ignorant comments. It sucks but is true. The article is very interesting and it is good that the man doesn't blame his past actions on his AS. There's too much bad press about us recently.

The public hates us. They want to get rid of us.

I cannot find any support in my area meant for autistic adults. Kids only. So I'm angry about this too.
