Once again, the day is saved... topic

They do not call Jesus Our lord and Saviour for nothing!!

Alternatively, Lightening can be a real Iconoclast :P (Thankfully, no one touched his Noodly appendage!)

Greatest story ever told! (Of course, the Taliban will turn this into Death to America )

Thanks, VG.

lightning apparently struck a vessel at the deepwater horizon spill site and lit it on fire.

an excellent news coincidence.

It's just a coincidence. There is nothing supernatural about lightning striking a statue.

Fire in the hole topic

Lost in translation was the fact that the Deepwater Horizon oil leak's fire was caused by lightening. I forgot all about this.

god may not like oil drilling either. On this we can agree.

That's absolutely correct - but there is something idiotic about making a statue that size out of plastic foam and fiberglass and thinking a lightning hit won't destroy it.

Not to mention all the biblical injunctions against making 'idols'. I mean technically it can be argued that making a crucifix is a sin. A Jesus statue that big might as well be riding a golden Mooby. :P

Maybe the Almighty didn't find the statue amazing enough. If you can't show grandeur through acts you need to rely on images.

The church must have skimped on building materials, out of need to pay the preacher. Evangelical churches typically have all the donations vacuumed up by the preacher and by the need to maintain those huge stadium-size churches. Everything else gets put on the back burner, except maybe proselytizing. The deluded xians can delude themselves that they can make a giant Jesus statue out of styrofoam and the Lord will be pleased, therefore there's no need for, you know, lightning rods. After all, the leader of the faithful holds the keys to the Mercedes*ahem*heaven. The fact that he is a giant Electrolux when it comes to the money is conveniently ignored. Some of these preachers have the congregation working second jobs as unpaid slaves, because it will supposedly get them a Mercedes*ahem*eternal life. They wash the preacher's car, take care of his kids, even maintain the church and cook the meals. God is NOT HAPPY! Next time it will be the preacher's turn!    Bwahahaha!
