How come the Queen is visiting Canada and her representative in Canada (the Governor General) is touring China?

Moreover, where was the Queen when PM Harper prorogued Canada's federal parliament twice? She wasn't doing photo ops with him, that's for sure! Oh well, Michaelle Jean was holding the fort, nothing to worry about.

Meh... Go figure what goes on =.= Madame Michael Jean is likely in China because the Queen can't? =/ And for some reason, that's important?

Improving relations between nations is not usually a bad thing, but HRH in China might cause more problems than it solves. Thus a lower level personage sets the groundwork. One day HRH will get to go, and there will be happy smiles all round.

Well, the Queen is visiting Canada because the Prime Minister invited her. And the presence of the Queen meant that the Governor General was free to visit Expo 2010 for Canada Day rather than being at the celebrations in Ottawa. The Prime Minister needed to warm up the relationship with the PRC after his somewhat frosty performance during his first couple of years.

As for Harper's prorogations, that is something that the Queen would step into unless her Governor General deliberately chose not to act. As far as I am aware the only two constitutional acts that the Queen must still perform are the appointment of a Governor-general, and the approval of the summonning of extra senators under section 26 of the Constitution Act.

I'll keep the Queen if she doesn't cost me anything. Also I really gotta stickk around to see King William - he's *so* Prince Arthur!

I don't know why Michele Jean the GG annoys me so much but she does. I want a hockey player for GG - they offered it to Jean Beliveau but he was sick (really) and turned it down. Did you know Frank Mahovlich is a senator? I want Don Cherry for GG - just watch him review the troops!

Thank you! I was under the misapprehension that the GG should be chief host to the Queen on her visit. But you say the Queen's visit frees up the GG for other things - good to know, thanks.

Au contraire, I think it gave us more bang for the buck. We had a huge amount of media coverage of the Royal Visit, and we got a huge profile in China for Canada Day. For all his shortcomings, I think the Prime Minister planned this one well.

The Queen's rep topic

ER and Philip are already on their way to the UN, at this moment in time. I would have thought that PM Harper would have chosen someone and that the ?Queen would be on hand, but maybe he needs more time?

I like Michele Jean, but Harper might prefer someone more in tune with his Cosnervative polices, though the GG is supposed to be above partisan politics, even if this is not necessarily the case.

The Queen always has a place in Canada. 8) William is ok. But NOT Charles. :roll:
