I imagine since she had "guards" she was in some type of SED class, in which case dealing with physically combative children is routine, thus they did not respond in an appropriate way.

Anyway why didn't they just call her parents? And honestly, not letting an 8 year old wear a hoodie? A cow hoodie none the less? What is she going to do? Hide drugs in it or something?

I've never understood why school administrators lack common sense. Is having had a lobotomy a prerequisite for the job?

No, but it is looked upon favourably by the recruitment people.

Not a good case, I would like to know would the school have called the cops on a NT boy or girl having a tantrum.

I would have sued the school even if my child hadn't had a tantrum and been arrested Not allowing a child to go to a party because they are disabled? Excuse my language but what a load of fuckwits.

She's autistic, she can't help it. She didn't even do any thing wrong.

this is once again, schools overeacting to the fact that Disabled kids get angry too, If you denied any other child to go to a party that the rest of the school were going to theyde get upset. But if you have a disabillity that appareantly means that, not only are we meant to put up with all, but it also means that we arent allowed to get angry!

And the rednecks come out of the woodwork. I found this gem among the comments: "But it is NOT appropriate to EXPECT the rest of society to accomodate someone who is disabled...in any way." Stupid enough to say that, but how it justifies putting a third-grader in handcuffs, I have no idea.

Yup, agreed. Discriminating against the disabled is a favourite unacknowledged pastime of teachers everywhere.

I'm not sure what makes it epic, but you're welcome! 8)

What's the point of having Special Education classes in schools these days if the staff is just gonna treat them like hardened criminals?!

I dont know how many more of these "autistic student arrested for displaying autistic behavior" stories I can take. It's time to start firing people and reeducate them on the fundamentals of autism.

I saw nothing wrong with what that girl did (i.e. wearing her favorite cow hoodie). Not an unreasonable request at all. Anyone with common sense would have seen that. To me it smells like that teacher had a personal grudge against that girl.

I remember this and saw this all un autism related. I don't see how refusing to remove a cow hoodie is an aspie thing. Even NT kids have refused to listen to things they found stupid such as hats off in class. Then they get pissed when it gets taken from them and whine about how mean their teacher is. I even remember when the new middle school was first built so they moved into the new middle school and the old middle school was empty and it was going to be torn down. But teachers and staff were being all irrational by not letting us kids break the windows and even I had thrown rocks at it and we all get yelled at. It just didn't make any sense and this one kid got in school suspinsion for throwing rocks at the windows and he thought it was so stupid. I thought so too. Would he have tried to leave the room if he were autistic?

I think mentioning her autism was irrelevant to what happened. Even NT kids get arrested when they get violent so I don't see how this was discrimination. I wonder if our thoughts would have been any different if they didn't mention her disability. I bet we all wouldn't be calling it discrimination. I sure don't call it that even though they did say she had autism. It looks like to me it's okay to arrest normal kids for being violent and we are expecting special treatment by not getting arrested for being violent or else it's discrimination.

How utterly ridiculous.. I was equally horrifed at the comments on that thread too at peoples naivity and non acceptence of Autistic children.

One of the commentors on that link (Mathew) told about he had the same thing happen with his 10 yr old son who's school called the police after his son started hitting a teachers arm who had hold of him.
...

I dont think that kind of thing happens where i live in Australia to children.

Completely inappropriate. I've dealt with an 11y/o MFA male that was rather large trying to force his way out the door, and physically restraining him (apart from blocking his exit) or calling the cops is not necessary. This kid I dealt with easily weighed 50% more than that girl too!

And good for the DA. You don't prosecute a special needs kid for ret*d behavior on the part of the adults in charge who are supposed to keep a safe environment. The school employees involved either need some serious retraining, or if that doesn't work, to be fired.
