The babies were wrapped in 1930s newspapers, as was a bowl found with them. Tickets from the 1932 Olympics were also found. The building where the steamer trunk was found, the Glen-Donald Apts, is across the street from a home once owned by Charlie Chaplin, the famous silent screen star.
Westlake was VERY wealthy in the early 1930s, and the building was built in 1926. Today, like so much of LA, it's Little Mexico. The manager speaks in heavily accented English, according to a KTLA TV report. The report also shows the full building, it was once really nice. It was a SRO hotel for "single women", since single adults were not deemed worthy of living in detached houses back then, and a number of starlets lived there.
The babies were likely from an illegal abortion. Every so often decades old dead babies are found, mute testament to the lack of options for unmarried, pregnant single women, even wealthy ones, long ago. Hollywood has never been a place of high morals, and abortion has been a constant part of society there. It's only been since the 1970s that a pregnant starlet could consider keeping her baby, ironically at the same time it finally became legal for her not to.
That catch-22--can't keep it, can't abort it-fueled "homes" for pregnant teenage girls (ask sinsboldly!) and coat hanger abortions for a price. The women who lived in that building in 1932 could easily afford an abortion on the down low. The abortionist in this case was apparently a woman-Jean Barrie was a "nurse"-so much for only men being abortionists, as the right wing would have you believe. Sad story, and there are those in this country who would rather have women hiding their unwanted babies in suitcases in basements than have abortion be legal.
Nightmare of Jeannie topic
The earlier the abortion, the better it is for all.
After testing, give the corpses a proper burial.
