Oh, Fox News. You so silly :)

Excerpt:

Mother Says Marijuana 'Saved Life' of Autistic Son

"Hester-Perez used anecdotal evidence she found on the Internet and elsewhere touting the benefits of feeding autistic children marijuana and used that to convince Joey’s psychiatrist to write him a prescription for the drug, which is legal for medical use in California.

“I don’t think my son was going to die,” Hester-Perez said. “I know my son was going to die."

And to think, I could have cured myself all along with a crumbly confection of carob-coated cannabis!

8O The tested prescribed drugs that they offer have the side effect of weight gain. Sounds like the mother just wanted him high and happy sitting in a corner so very, very sad, before anyone goes on about how I haven't walked in her shoes blah, blah, blah I have a nine yr old Auntie son who does from time to run run off and has scaried the hell out of me with his behavoir. I deal with it with out giving my son maryjane.

The kid may have had sensory issues with food, in the same way that many autistic kids hate the feeling of poop traveling through them and will hold it in instead, this kid may not have liked the feeling of food going down his esophagus, or the feeling of being "full". The running out of the house is normal, and the only solution seems to be to lock them in. I think that mom just wanted a crutch to use so that she wouldn't have to address the REAL issues. Hey, if the kid's stoned, he won't be such a problem! Well, ok, but the cure is worse than the problem. And you can find virtually ANY "treatment" for autism online. The scope of autism quackery is truly breathtaking.

It's still seems more reasonable and less dangerous than chelation though. I have not followed the link to the original Fox article, but I think it's not helpful as it may encourage others to try this. I prefer media coverage of dubious treatments to be well-researched and neither encouraging nor even neutral to the treatment if the research indicates the treatment is of dubious value or high risk when weighed against proven benefits.

When I was younger and more Autistic, I wouldn't eat or sleep much, so I went on Risperdal and it made me gain weight and helped me sleep. Sure, after quite a few years, it gave me some bad side-effects, but pot CANNOT be good for any kid. I've heard that smoking pot is 10x then smoking cigarette.

10x more awesome, that is

I certainly wouldn't give dope to a little kid, but as far as adults are concerned, I'd way rather see them stoned than on risperdal...

Pot boiler topic

Gives the term medical marijuana a new twist on an old joint.

Smoke does get in your eyes, clouding good judgment.

Jumping from the pot into the fire.

Poor kid. :(

My sister would give me pot brownies when I was in the eating disorder ward with anorexia, she saved me, that child was dieing of starvation so I think his mother did the right thing, using marijuana is better then forcing food down this child's throat or putting a feeding tube into his stomach, I can't believe how uptight some people are over using pot, even if its gives some comfort to the dieing or helps someone pull though an illness

It's not so much that it's the "Horrible Evil of Pot: ;) but that the idea is that weed is all it takes to treat autism. Still, watch out for the reefer madness (if I may reference a true classic)! !! !! :D

The quacks always come running for any new or difficult/not yet understood medical issue and they all have the perfect cure in one week with no side-effects or high price just $20 bucks and your cured or immune! Then you never see them ever again and no one else does either funny you'd think they'd just open a store and make millions..... But yeah look up a cure for the common cold same thing in a way everyone wants it but know one can make it so people lie and make a buck or support a cause (which makes them a buck)

Turns out it's half true. The best technology available for 'palliative' treatment of autism (there is no 'curative' treatment), is a combination of training, yoga and cannabis. That's where the cutting edge is at the moment. Nowhere else!

Weed may have benefits compared to side effect heavy pharma drugs. All depends on the person and situation.

Marijuana has very few long term side effects compared to nearly any prescription medicine that does...Well, anything.

If it's effective, I say use it.
