(CBS News) WASHINGTON - Federal agent John Dodson says what he was asked to do was beyond belief.

He was intentionally letting guns go to Mexico?

"Yes ma'am," Dodson told CBS News. "The agency was."

An Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms senior agent assigned to the Phoenix office in 2010, Dodson's job is to stop gun trafficking across the border. Instead, he says he was ordered to sit by and watch it happen.

Investigators call the tactic letting guns "walk." In this case, walking into the hands of criminals who would use them in Mexico and the United States.

Well someone is in serious trouble, and quite frankly it wouldn't surprise me if this can be tracked all the way back to the DoJ and Eric Holder or the White House.

Eric Holder and the ATF are scum. It's shocking this happened, but it's not beneath them. Gun owners all knew there was something really unholy going on with project gunrunner. It was obvious they wanted lots of information about who is purchasing guns in the border states (though that wouldn't have helped them much), but nobody would have reasonably guessed that the ATF was helping to send guns to Mexican cartels.

If enough American made (or foreign made guns with traceability back to the US) are "found" in Mexico then that feeds the argument for stricter gun control in the US. Various politicians would love that and it would benefit the ATF in terms of increased budget and powers.

That's my thoughts as to why this was happening as well, just someone spoke up about it thank goodness.

The truth is. I am not surprised that this is happening. FFS. Just look at the business model of the US economy.

I honestly think this has nothing to do with businesses in the US, I think this has to do with people in the Government trying to create an emergency to pull a stunt to take away freedoms.

When you have an economy which sells weapons... and a government which supports it's economy... they are going to most profit from wars. If I was that government I would want to have as many wars going on as possible.

Actually, it looks like the motives were more about trying to restrict the ability to own a Gun in the United States by creating a situation in Mexico.

I am sorry Inuyasha. You have taken my comment the wrong way. When I said I was not surprised, I was referring to the fact that the United States were dealing arms in the first place. This news actually emerging did surprise me. The news itself does not surprise me.

We have a winner.

A Border Patrol agent was shot dead with one of these said weapons, making the ATF culpable in his slaying, while the Administration holds pressers with Mexico's President on curtailing the demand of illegal drugs in the U.S. and stopping the flow of illegal guns into Mexico.

Mexico has a terrible illegal drug problem. The illegal nature of any commodity creates an underground market, be it drugs, cigarettes, full flow toilets...whatever creates an underground demand. And, different taxes between states, counties or municipalities also create underground markets. You can buy a pack of smokes in NY for $11.00 or a bootlegged pack of smokes from a southern state for less $.

Now for NY to recoup the lost taxes, they have to pay Government workers to track down the culprits. Point being, Government is claiming to be part of the solution while it is also part of the problem. Decriminalize the weed in the U.S. if you really want to threaten Mexican cartels. But, if you are a big government type, then the War on Drugs just needs some more money to be successful and the ATF is no exception. More money is the solution for all things liberal.
