sorry, our local time.

they're saying they can't be sure until hawaii gets hit, but they only expect marine inundation. i might drive down and check it out, it's been years since i've seen one.

the height of tsunamis are terribly hard to predict given wave refraction, seabed depths etc. I recall reading that the last big one in Chile cause major problems in Japan of all places.

In Australia's case, it's the refraction around New Zealand that's critical. There is actually geological evidence for tsunamis having struck the Eastern Seaboard in the past and travelling up to 5 km in land. They're predicted every 500 years and the last one was 700 years ago, so we are over due.

I've read there's been activity in the Columbian/Venezuelan volcano network recently. Could the South American plate be acting up? I think Haiti is in a different zone but share a boundary.

Chile is on the South American Plate which borders the Caribbean Plate where Haiti is.

hawaii's due to be hit in about an hour and a half.
we're due in about 40 minutes - ours is expected to only be 2-3 feet, as we're on the periphery.
i understand hawaii is in the direct path.
you can view/listen to hitsunami.info for direct coverage by their local media, with video of the bay on the big island (i think)

prayers go out to chile and all involved. this one sloshed water in lake ponchatrain (new orleans).

I'm watching CNN right now, they have live feed from Hawaii in Hilo. People in Hawaii had advanced waring, and are staying away from the water. The 1960 Tsunami from the Chile earthquake, caused many deaths. Prayers go out to the people of Chile and any one affected if the Tsuami hits any countries in it's path.

What I find striking is how little damage there was given it was an 8.8 quake (orders of magnitude bigger than that in Haiti). I suspect the Chileans have some of the best civil engineers in the world (or the strictest building codes). My sympathies to anyone affected.
