This is an article that is pretty close to my heart because I met Floyd the dog the day he came in to our shelter. The surgery area (where he was shaved) is right next to our small animal rooms so I saw him several times that day. It's so serious that it made national news:

WARNING: the DM article contains upsetting pictures. The top one is not quite as horrible. Please do not look at the second link if you are upset by pictures of animals in poor condition.

I'm wishing Floyd, who still needs further treatment for eye, dental and leg problems, all the best and hopefully he will soon be well enough to find a loving new home.

Poor dog. Can't imagine the scenario that ended up with a dog apparently receiving food and being kept alive, but being neglected so cruelly :(

Nice to hear he's started wagging his tail and being more friendly and confident now

The shelter has just announced that hundreds of donations have been made to help with Floyd's treatment thanks to the many articles that have been written. I was warned that things like this happened at the shelter but I still wasn't prepared for what I saw :'(

I wouldn't be surprised if this dog was owned by an elderly person who lost the ability to care for him properly and perhaps the family didn't find out things had gotten so bad until recently, panicked, and dropped him at the shelter as they did.

That is something we thought. Quite often the person who abandons the dog is not the owner. We might never find out what happened to poor Floyd though as with most of our animals :(

Glad to hear poor Floyd is doing better, & donations are pouring in on his behalf.

My dog came from a rescue organization. When they rescued him from the streets, he was more dead than alive, suffering from malnutrition & an ear infection. He had also been badly mistreated, as whenever my hubby went to put on his leash or remove it, our dog would cringe in fear (thinking he was going to receive a beating). He has since learned that men are not going to hurt him, although if someone approaches him making loud noises or shuffling of feet, he has a relapse of fear. :-( It'll probably take more time for him to forget the abuse completely, if he ever does. He's doing quite well, & is spoiled rotten...for the past 2 1/2 years. He has filled out, & now has to eat diet food, because he loves to eat!

I hope Floyd gets a good forever home where he is well cared for & spoiled too. He deserves it after having to endure years of neglect & abuse.

That poor creature; it took a couple seconds to register with me that that was a dog!

I saw Floyd again yesterday at work and he's looking a lot happier. They are preparing to get his hind legs x-rayed to find out why he's struggling to walk. The donations came in so much that they've gone way over their target and so the other lucky animals are going to get some extra warm bedding and treatment this year!

Good for you Jellybean, I really could not work in an animal shelter as I would be too overcome by what I saw I'm sure. I always drop off donations of food to my local one and if I ever have a clear out I always drop that off to the PDSA.

But I really appreciate people like you who are hands on. :salut:

^ thanks. I purely do it for the love of animals, although I only work with the smaller furries not the dogs! (I'd do both if I had more time!)

Here's a video update about Floyd. his legs are looking a lot better today than when I last saw him:

I hope Floyd will have a good time from now on. Such a cute dog has to find a caring home.
