Long story short I don't pay attention to the news. Will this ban making fan-comics, talking about TV shows, making parodies , watching funny clips of shows on Youtube, etc.? O does it ban more things than that?

Essentially that, plus it gives the US Government and Hollywood control over the Internet so they can censor what ever they do not want you to see.

Pretty much, even worse than that actually. There's no due process so if you caught with infringing content, your site can be blacklisted without prior warning.

It gives copyright holders the power shut down any site that they say is improperly using their material. So, basically whatever the copyright holders don't like is banned. Oh, and they don't have to provide evidence and you don't get to defend yourself in court. So, false accusation == guilty, shut down and no recourse.

Basically, YouTube would be history in seconds, and technically even Google could be shut down, since you can find links on it to copyrighted material. In fact, if you wanted to kill WrongPlanet you could make a post to something that's copyright and alert the owner. SOPA is a giant power overreach. It's cartoonishly bad.

^ that. The basics of it is that if the gov. decides X type of content is undesirable they will be legally able to simply block the IP and fine/jail the person posting it.

In short, it lets them do what china does to its citizens: control the information.

I don't think it will happen. There will be too much of an outcry from people for them to be able to get away with it.
And if they do get away with it, I will boycott every one of their products.

By the way, DO NOT forget about PIPA as well at any cost, that's basically SOPA's sister bill that has a greater chance of passing!

Sorry for the bold, but it's that important to mention.

the powers-that-be want to return us to a 1920s-style state of being where stuff could not be copied at all from the originals, and if one had no access to the originals, then tough beans. they hope to make all the people presently seeing and hearing free stuff on youtube and such to pay through the nose for every single viewing and for every single listen.

You're all close, but you've missed the basic point.

SOPA would eliminate any of the creative competition to the established media. That is, the major recording studios see a loss of revenue every time some garage band self-produces a popular single or album; the publishing houses see a loss of revenue every time somebody writes an unlicensed fanfic of a popular TV show or movie; the comic-book syndicates see a loss in revenue every time a new webcomic gets published without their involvement; and the studios see a loss of revenue every time someone posts their own YouTube video of their friends putting together a low-budget indie flick.

Big Media can't handle the loss of revenue due to "amateur" competition, and also wants creative control over what gets put on the Internet.

Think of it as Organized Crime getting upset whenever someone runs a successful business without giving the Mob any "protection" money.

It's a shake-down by Big Media, plain and simple.
