Does it matter?
Suppose the story that he told motivated judges and audience to move him through. Does that mean that his talent is irrelevant, and anyone with a emotional tale to spin can have their reach exceed their grasp? Suppose on the other hand that the tale did not motivate the judges, and that his talent alone was sufficient to move him through. Then the question of whether the story is true or not has nothing to do with whether or not he is a talented enough performer.
And let's not forget, storytelling in and of itself is an artform that requires talent. If he had you all believing, then he certainly does have talent.
