$40,000 for a Playstation 3?

Can't you just tell your kids that Christmas has been delayed for a couple of months?

I hope they are paying sales tax on that purchase.

What a way to invest your money. Pay $600 and sell for $44,100. I wonder if you could call that a capital gain.

If a kid is at an age where they want a Playstation 3 than they are ready to be nudged into the reality that Christmas gifts have limitations. This is one of the those "status" toys for older kids (and adults) - much like Tickle Me Elmo for little kids was causing hysteria a while ago.

I remember when Teletubby toys were all the rage...

If that's what they are going for, I vote that the more thuggish among us get together and do a little 'Christmas shopping' of our own off the back of a truck.

Weight of a Ps3 is approximately 5 kg., or $8,000 / kilo. By comparison, pure gold is about $19,998 / kilo. right now. That's 40% of the value of pure gold, by weight.

AHAHAHA, I just noticed, the name of the winning bidder is 'intellectguy777'. Is that what irony means?

I can believe it could happen. All the conditions are right for this.

I was seriously looking into selling one on EBay, the problem was that I didn't get a preorder in time (and line ups were everywhere) (I may try this with a Wii if I can)

The reason why the Playstation 3s are so expensive, is because other people believe they can sell them for massive amounts of profit. Thus it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

The people who are actually paying that much money for the most part are probably people who have so much money it doesn't even matter that much. Most people I think are just gambling.

I'd tell that to a kid. If they knew you spent $44K they'd become materialistic little buggers who'd waste money iike that for the rest of their lives.

As an aside, I wonder if the winning bidder will turn out to be a hoax....

You know... they're getting WEEKLY shipments of both the PS3 and the Wii in most stores now. The only thing these eBay people are doing is getting one a week or 2 before everyone else can... minus the 24-hour launch campout in front of a random store.

I saw $9,100... but 40k?! I'd rather buy a warhammer with that. ;p

If you checked ebay carefully, it seems some units have sold for less than $15.
It may be a case of private negotiation to avoid listing/selling fees that ebay will charge based on the final bid price, but they're out there.
The extreme demand for the ps3 is a little odd when you look at the available games for it at the moment. The games they showcased with it earlier in the year weren't released, either. So, it has become a purely status-driven price, nothing to do with actually USING it to play games :)

I suggest that Santa replaces all requests for PS3s with space hoppers, pogo sticks, yo-yos and hula hoops this year. Bring back the old fun :D
