Australian scientists have developed a genetic test to predict autism spectrum disorder in children, which could provide a long-sought way for early detection and intervention, according to a study published on Wednesday.

This test will have to be vetted extensively before it can be relied on.

I fear this new genetic testing, if proven to be reliable, will be another excuse for people to abort babies with developmental disorders.

Especially since they are already doing this to down syndrome babies...

"70 percent accuracy"

Which means 30 percent of the time it can't be trusted. Fantastic.

I'm confused by the article as to whether or not this is prenatal or post-birth. Please be post-birth. >.> If it's 70% accuracy it better not contribute to a eugenics movement.

70% accuracy is pretty rubbish. I don't think this is in any way suitable for use in clinics, for early detection. What does the result tell you? Absolutely nothing to very little.

A .7 confidence level is way too low for vetting a diagnostic method.

There is nothing wrong with aborting babies. This way, it will allow people to not be stuck with someone they will have to care for, for possibly the rest of thier lives.

Thank you for showing once and for all why I'm against abortion period!

Doing that with down syndrome is extensive here now.... I fear that this will be exactly the same and it makes me extremely sad.

It was what he/she has been brainwashed into believing...

Anyways, what I fail to get is how can anyone here be pro-abortion when we're seeing abortion being used to commit genocide and it looks like we might be next on the list.

How can anyone here support Obama or the Democrats in general when we're looking at abortion potentially being used as the "cure" for Autism? Do you people hate yourselves that much, do you think so little of your own value as a human being, to desire that?

There is a basic epistemological problem here. We do not have a firm definition of what autism is. Whenever a syndrome is invoked, it means the under lying disorder is not well understood.

Is Autism even a disorder? In particular is Asperger's Syndrome a disorder?
