Alex Karras, the rugged lineman who anchored the Detroit Lions' defense in the 1960s, then went on to an acting career in which he starred in the sitcom “Webster” and famously punched a horse in the 1974 comedy “Blazing Saddles,” died Wednesday, October 10, 2012. He was 77.

Playing a not-so-bright bruiser in Mel Brooks' “Blazing Saddles,” he not only slugged a horse but also delivered the classic line: "Mongo only pawn in game of life."

He's the only professional American football player that I ever admired. Now he's gone.

One of the most memorable characters from a truly memorable movie. God speed, Mongo.

I will forever cherish the scene where Mongo comes riding into town on an ox. Later on he punches a steer and it falls down.

Very funny. No animals were injured in making all that funny stuff.

Well, Mongo is gone.

I will cry a tear when it is Mel Brook's turn. He is genius.

He is receiving that big candygram in the sky.

I didn't know until recently that he and Susan Clark were married in real life.

I remember him more from reading all the football history books I read as a kid in the 90s.

But that line is not only funny but indicative of how I feel - We are only pawns in the game of life.
