From WNBC, out of New York City:

Quote:
A state senator from Brooklyn said on Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation that would ban people from using an MP3 player, cell phone, Blackberry or any other electronic device while crossing the street in New York City and Buffalo.

NewsChannel 4 reported that Sen. Carl Kruger is proposing the ban in response to two recent pedestrian deaths in his district, including a 23-year-old man who was struck and killed last month while listening to his iPod on Avenue T and East 71st Street In Bergen Beach.

This strikes me as an excessive overreaction.

Wouldn't that in turn make it illegal to cross the street if you were deaf?

haha I see your point but they are "still aware" of whats going on as they can view it with their eyes.. but blind people don't have that ability..

If this passes, watch what else passes. Freedom? Freedom to do whatever we allow you to

i think cell phones should be banned while driving because many accidents are caused by them, but walking? I mean if you get hurt crossing a street because of your usage of a elerctronic device, well then Darwin says "let him die". LOL

Actually, I'll look for a report, but cell phones don't actually cause many accidents (or, are at least included in them). I recall 2% of accidents were cell phone while 3% were adjusting the radio. Don't quote me on that just yet, though.

EDIT: Nah, can't find anything

I just think that's an infringement on people's rights. We don't need a nanny government

It is banned in Britain - I seem to remember a report when it first happened saying using a phone while driving is more dangerous than being just over the drink-drive limit. (80mg/100ml blood in Britain)

As for the road crossing law, I think it's ridiculous. And also difficult to realistically enforce.

It may become illegal, but in NYC at any rate what cop is actually going to enforce it?

Obligatory Anecdotal NYC Story that supports this post:

An accquaintances band had just played at a dive bar on the Lower East Side, and were riding the subway to another friend's house. It's late at night, and there are a few other people riding in the same car, one of them being a Port Authority Transit cop sitting directly opposite their party.

One of the Native New Yorkers in the party ignores the Transit Cop, and pulls out a bag of pot and proceeds to remove stems and seeds from the small portion. The Transit cop idly watches and does nothing.

The man in question then proceeds to produce a pack of cigarette papers roll up the small quantity of pot up. The Transit Cop watches, unimpressed.

Only when the guy pulls out his lighter and attempts to light it up, does the cop respond, telling him "Don't push your luck, buddy".

Out of all the crimes that happen in NYC, or the rest of the state for that matter, using a iPod in a crosswalk will have an incredibly low priority.

However, if the police should try to enforce the law, would Walkman's and other music players still be legal?

This is absolutely ridiculous. How would they possibly enforce that? Have a cop on every street corner? Turn citizens into spies? Put up cameras and then allow it to access the driver's license database? Issue everyone an RFID chip? This kind of legislation leads to contempt of the law.

Doesn't matter how, we need it banned! Basically, we're taking what people should do, responsibly, then FORCING people to do it by writing it down and making it law.

Basically, I'm being condemned and called "irresponsible" because of others.. I had a thread talking about "generalizing" everyone, no better argument then here! How about if you're driving and playing the "flute" you have your license removed and are beaten, slaughtered, and removed from society as an individual?

How about if you're drinking or eating and swerving all over, you are pulled over for WRECKLESS DRIVING - THATS illegal.. not specific REASONS for wreckless driving.. If I'm eating and driving better then everyone on the road, something that is actually true (I'm not standing tall here, I'm stating a truth as I take driving EXTREMELY seriously (you'd be surprised what you learn after owning a motorcycle in regards to bad drivers)) then why, in the BLUE HELL, would i be fined?

P.S. I do consider myself a good driver. Motorcycling teaches you that drivers dont pay attention. And, while on it, you've 0 distractions. I can tell, if a car is swerving to the right, he is adjusting the radio or playing with something on the right side of his car.. If he is swerving left, there is a good chance he is on a cell phone with his left hand.. if he's all over the road, he just sucks at driving and isn't looking at the right spot

Oh I have a better idea. Why don't they hire a babysitter for every U.S. citizen so there's no chance anyone will be left unsupervised to do something stupid? Or better yet, go all Orwellian and have 24/7 survailence with video cameras everywhere including your own home?

Hell! THEY (and you know who they are) are banning my asthma inhaler due to CFC messing up ozone. Issues: 1. know where CFC goes when it comes out? Down like a rock. CFC is heavy. 2. know how much chlorine Pinatubo put into air when it went off? 3 times all that man has ever done! 4. Know how much CFC in an anhaler? hardly any. 5. product declared "non essential" that kinda declares ME non essential too.

Tellya' wot, let us then get up everyone's ban list and combine them. We will ban everything. I want to ban from life itself everyone who wants to be my mommy! I am 53 bloody years old and don't need a mommy!

Gettin' tired of all this lot.

BAN THE BANS
