At The Telegraph.

Imgur is not uploading the photos, else I would have put them on here too.

Dear Tequila, thank you for this.

I have a habit of self-pity, and this puts my circumstances into perspective.

This further puts into perspective the Chinese government's insistence on limiting the number of births...this is their culture now, they have hundreds or thousands of people who want to produce big traditional families; how much worse it could become if harsh laws were not enacted?

Thank you, again.

I could adapt to a space like that as long as I didn't have roommates.

For a while in 2010 I virtually lived in a Delivery Van. My job was doing long haul delivery so instead of blowing my money on motel rooms I slept in the cargo van. I would take occasional breaks to sleep in a real bed at my parents' house and then go back out on the road for a month.

In a space like this you have room for a small dorm fridge, maybe a small electric grill, a bed, and a TV or computer. Possibly hang clothes from the ceiling. A raised bunk bed with appliances underneath would make sense.

This has nothing to do with the one-child policy, for two reasons:

First, conditions like these existed all the way through the British Administration of Hong Kong. The Kowloon Walled City was still standing when I took up my posting in Hongkong in the 90's.

Second, the one-child policy does not apply to Hongkong under the "one-country; two systems" approach.

Or try being a truck driver.

Yes people basically live in these truck sleeper berths while hauling down the road. It's not looked as a living condition crises but a way of life.I did it for 2 years and it's not that bad. I mostly quit because the stupid government regulations were to frustrating.

That truck berth looks GREAT to me!

I always liked trailer living.

Those Hong Kong 'apartment' things, though......ugh.

But the Hong Kong apartments are probably bigger. It depends on how you use the space. It can either be cozy or cramped.

I see your point; and, looking again, there is a lot of 'stuff' that seems unnecessary that is taking up room.

Plus, those places really should be 'Single Occupancy'.
