I really think a civilised country like,Canada needs to put an end to this barbaric practice which has no place in 2013.
I would never be able to kill a single seal. They have the most beautiful eyes.

Let's hear it for the seals!

Im not suggesting that any of us have to make a donation unless it can be afforded and you want to. But what one can do is pressure your own government to intervene, or do whatever you personally feel can help.

Seriously... I don't know one person who has EVER been seal clubbing. :salut:

Then again look what we as humans do to chickens, cows, and OTHER HUMANS. No place in 2013 you say?

You're right of course. No human, animal or bird should have to endure such cruelty. We should always stand up for victims of inhumanity, whoever they may be.

What a complete load of sentimental nonsense.

The seal hunt is a sustainable hunt. Seal populations are increasing, notwithstanding the hunt. By controlling the growth of the seal population, the population of food fish on the Grand Banks is mitigated--particularly in light of European overfishing in the region.

The seal hunt continues to be an important economic activity in Newfoundland--a region which continues to be challenged for employment growth. Not only that, seal is a significant source of food and of pelts for clothing.

As for the so-called barbarism of the hunt it has been widely studied by organizations with vested interests in both preserving and stopping the hunt. One of the few disinterested studies, by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association found that the vast majority of seal kills were acceptably humane. Even the World Wildlife Fund has found that assesment of the hunt is largely based on emotional response. The WWF concluded that a hakapik strike is humane when it achieves rapid, irreversible loss of consciousness that leads to death.

Objection to the seal hunt is unscientific and emotional. It is not grounded in any rational assessment of the practices of hunting or of the disposition of harvested animals.

And perhaps most importantly, it is a wantonly callous threat to the livelihood of tens of thousands of people, not only in the sealing industry itself, but in the Atlantic offshore fishery as well.

The seal hunt is not the only or the worst cruelty to animals going on today. I too don't like to see a baby seal clubbed to death, but it's not as bad as what goes on in the commercial farming industry.

Harp Seal Conservation Status: Least Concern.

Oh, and this (harp seal population levels):

In other words, so what?

Furthermore, this caught my eye.

I consider this statement to be a pretty accurate description of the priorities of PETA. Which is why I loathe PETA.

Once they start focusing on creatures that are actually *threatened* (like several species of rhinoes, sharks and tigers) I might start paying attention to them.

But noooo, let's find some cute pictures of puppies, kittens and baby seals and have some Hollywood celebrities prance around naked rather than focusing on real dire conservation issues.

if the seal hunt stops then some of the excess seal population would just get eaten by polar bears.which could send polar bear and arctic fox population out of control.they would be a potential nucense to local villagers.

the only winners if seal hunting was banned would be polar bears and artic fox and the eco system disrupted in the process because natives have hunted seals for miliniums

Back when a hippy high school teacher showed the class a video of seal clubbing, I thought it odd that they didn't just use a small caliber rifle (.22LR) to put them down, as clubbing seemed to be counterproductive regarding the continued practice of such.

A single .22LR round is only like 10 cents when you buy in bulk, and it's humane when put in the brain.

A worldwide ban on hunting seals? What about the Inuits? Don't they eat seals for food?

I don't like to think of baby seals being clubbed to death either. But if the harp seal population is of least concern status, then there is no real threat to the population as a whole, and the ban is not necessary.

Seal is damn tasty stuff I might add! Not to mention the fur is amazing.
Seal hunting is no more immoral or inhumane than any other regulated hunting that I know of.

The clubbing is said to be more humane; you don't miss the head.

Killing baby seals is illegal since many years, it's the adults that are killed.
