McDonald's branch first to offer plates and table service
  • A branch of McDonald's in Australia will become the first outlet in the world to offer diners the option of plates, cutlery and table service.
The outlet in the seaside suburb of Warilla, south of Sydney, won approval from the international fast-food giant's global headquarters in Chicago to trial a more formal service for five weeks.

The couple who run the outlet, Glenn and Katia Dwarte, came up with the idea after they started serving his parents and mother-in-law meals using cutlery during their weekly visits. The cutlery caught the attention of other patrons who began to request similar service.

When the company's Australian head, Catriona Noble, made a visit before Christmas, the franchisees served her a meal with crockery and glassware.

in australia, they have eliminated "trans fats" and trimmed back salt (that is ok) and sugar (not ok) from the burgers and nuggets etc, and as a result, mcdonalds no longer melts in my mouth and it is a chore to chew.

when i was a child, i could swallow a bite of a quarter pounder with cheese within a few seconds (about 4 chews) , but now, with all the imposed healthy alterations, it takes me 20 chews to swallow, and i really become disgusted at what is in my mouth after i have chewed it 20 times before swallowing. they are dry and featureless now. actually they taste more salty than they did along time ago, and i guess that is because of the removal of sugar from the buns or something. quarter pounders used to almost dissolve in my mouth when i was 8, but now they have to be chewed for longer because of my reduced lacrimation aroused by them.

filets of fish are the same. once they had a mild mayonnaise sauce on them and they were delicious, but now some clod has "piqued" the sauce and it is more like tartare sauce which i do not like at all. the sauce now tastes more vinegary and i find it too much of a sensation that detracts from the inherent taste.

when i go to mcdonalds, i order a big mac with 1/2 the amount of sauce (which ensures i get a fresh one), and a filet of fish with 1/2 sauce (same reason), and a medium fries with no salt and 2 paper packets of salt (so i can salt them myself) which results in fresh fries (because they always automatically salt their fries as soon as they are cooked, so for me to order unsalted fries, i must wait for a new batch to be cooked). some cashiers become disgruntled when i order 2 sachets of salt with my unsalted fries but who cares except for them?

the closest mcdonalds to me now is 30 km away, and 30 km is too long a journey to simply buy mcdonalds.

there is a "hungry jacks" 24 km away, but my name is not "jack", and i do not know any people called "jack" and so i can not tell if i would have a similar palate to people called "jack" because i never spoke to a person called "jack" to deduce what their tastes are like. do all "jacks" have the same tastes? who cares. it is 24 km away and not worth the petrol to find out. and if i had to prove my name was "jack" in order to be served, then i would not be able to provide falsified documentation that says my name is "jack"

thank goodness my name is not "jack" because that name sounds unappealing to me, and similarly, i guess i would also find unappetizing, foods that people called "jack" would like.

i am extremely tired but not intoxicated by external agents. i am in the basement of my communicability and i just know words, and i cobble them together to say what i can in this state.

You can blame the (usually unelected and anti-democratic) healthist loons for that.

@b9

Just ask for fresh food, fast food workers HATE people who ask for fries without salt and such just to get fresh ones, they're much cooler with a straightforward request for fresh food than with a transparent ruse; it sorta insults their intelligence.

If I recall correctly, Burger King tried something similar in the early 90s but failed miserably.

I also heard that McDonald's is introducing "McWraps" in the USA, which are larger than the Snack Wraps. And they are also getting rid of Chicken Selects, and possibly Angus burgers. I haven't seen any direct indication that the Snack Wraps are being discontinued, even though they are made with Chicken Selects. I would miss them if they went away, and the Angus burgers too, though I can't say I've ordered one of those too recently. Perhaps there will be a spike in the sales now that people have heard they might go away. And hey, they could always bring it back as an occasional limited-time thing like the McRib or Shamrock Shake (they did say they were interested in more limited-time items).

Regarding special orders: At Burger King, I'll sometimes ask for my Whopper Jr. without tomatoes partially so they can make it fresh. Though it's somewhat justified since I also don't care for tomatoes and will usually remove them anyway (yet I like ketchup, go figure). Then again BK is all about "have it your way" anyhow. I have heard that McDonald's is also a lot more fussy about that. I do sometimes ask for Quarter Pounders without cheese though - you would think they'd at least be understanding about *that*.

As far as trans fats go, I do find that McDonald's fries aren't as consistently enjoyable since they were removed, though it does depend on how fresh they are, and they still generally are better than BK or Wendy's fries in my opinion.

i forgot i posted in this thread. my post sounded like i was OK with the trans fats removed as well as salt reduction. i only meant i was not perturbed by the reduction of salt. the removal of the trans fats makes the beef patties dry and chewy.

i am sorry i was not aware that you have had experience being a fast food worker.

i actually do not like the slathering of "special sauce" on big macs or the troweling on of the tartare sauce on the filets "o" fish, so it is a win-win situation for me as i get freshly cooked burgers.

the only thing that is a "ruse" is my requirement for the unsalted fries in addition to separate salt sachets, but i presume they imagine that i want to salt my own fries more sparingly than their default level of salting.

only a paranoid person would think i am engaging in subterfuge in order to get "fresh" burgers and fries when presented with my order.

if i outright said that i want my burgers and fries to be "fresh", i would think that they would be more offended.

my approach has occasionally backfired on me when they give me the burgers and make me wait for the fries for 5 minutes.

whatever.

Those "unelected healthist loons" are acting under statutory authorities that have been passed by the legislature.

Government doesn't function without a public service that is separate and apart from the political function. Giving the people who administer law an electoral mandate is a recipe for a standoff between government and the legislature. The stupidest of all stupid ideas.

So next time you complain about "unelected" and "anti-democratic" loons, take a moment to read the statutes that authorize their actions.

Never actually worked fast food, but I've been in the restaurant off and on for years, and a lot of my coworkers came from fast food. The thing about no salt fries is that it's so well known as a dodge to get fresh fries without coming out and asking for fresh fries that it's just assumed that anyone asking for them is really just after a new basket and not trying to adhere to a diet. Unfair, perhaps, but in your case it happens to be completely true, so any "paranoia" would be completely justified. Just ask for fresh fries if that's what you want.
