Boy, this was a long 'un. Pretty comprehensive, though. I guess it highlights what we all know - the term "Asperger's" will be stricken from the DSM-V and there's nothing that could be done about that. It's interesting that people will still call themselves "aspie." I've been trying to face the future without the term and have been referring to myself as being autistic. I was diagnosed with Asperger's by a clinical psychologist last year but part of me would want a new autism diagnosis just to be sure.

it is not that everyone is on the autism spectrum.every person is on a nuerological spectrum and people react to the world in a certain way.if there reactions are so strong that it impairs there ability to function then thats what a doctor would call autism.if a person doesnt react strongly enough to the world and that impairs functioning most doctors call that mental retardation.

there can be a fine line between a geek or nerd and a diagnosably case of autism and there can be a fine line between that very relaxed easy going guy who is not at all the intelectual and a diagnosibly case of mental retardation.
everyone is on the nuero spectrum

The f**k ever. I still stand with, We have become a culture of such pervasive "success" and luxury that we now pathologize anything that causes us a moment's discomfort or confusion.

We don't expect to have to tolerate, accept, or learn to understand.

Read The Giver, by Lois Lowry. Just-- don't plan on sleeping soundly for a few nights afterward.

Sounds like a fishing expedition to me...maybe I can claim my next door neighbor has Aspergers because when I say hello to him he doesn't answer back. Typical media overtures like dancing on a pin. I like the comment (by a reader) that the journalist should go back and do some reading about Aspergers that it's an erroneous profile of high functioning autistic kids made by Hans Asperger in 1944 in Nazi Germany.

Journalists are the least scholarly, least intellectually competent among the professionals. I would guess that Journalism Students are scrape from the dregs at the bottom of the intellectual barrel (metaphorically speaking).

I think the author of this piece needs to review his research.
Asperger's was offered as a medical diagnosis in 1944, when Prof. Asperger published his paper describing the condition.

Actually prospective students (at least here in Australia) have to score a 90 average in their grades to get into a reputable journalism school. Smart kids but they become conditioned to be dumb and sloppy when it comes to sourcing their information or telling the truth. No rigorous peer review of tabloid/news articles.

That means they know how to spell and punctuate. It does not mean they know how to think.
