Catholics stand by PR archbishop amid Vatican pressure
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Roman Catholics in Puerto Rico rallied Wednesday around an archbishop who is apparently under pressure from the Vatican to resign for allegedly covering up for sexually abusive priests and other misdeeds.
Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves has not confirmed that he is being asked to step down as leader of the Catholic Church in the U.S. island territory. However, he has asked parishioners to pray for him.
“I beg of you, please, do not send letters to the Holy See with expressions of solidarity. There is only one thing to do in situations like these: Pray,” he wrote in a May 3 letter that was read to churchgoers last Sunday. “I know the last two weeks have been intense and painful for all of us for reasons you already know.”
Dear Roberto,
Frank's getting pretty insistent that we hang someone out to dry this year on a paedophilia cover up. Not for paedophilia itself--God forbid! The communications people down the hall would have a fit if we actually admitted that any bishop was involved in anything worse than a sideways glance at a deacon now and then. Just for the covering it up part. We have to throw the occasional Christian to the lions (hehehe) on this one to keep AP and Reuters from looking too deep into what was going on in Argentina in the 70's.
He wanted to dislodge Benny and throw him to the wolves, but he figures it would look bad for him to go back on the "Get-the-hell-out-before-we-throw-you-out" deal we made at the Consistory. So unfortunately, you drew the short straw. Sorry 'bout that.
Of course, this means no red hat for you. But we'll find you a nice job tucked away in a corner of the Curia somewhere.
Love and kisses
Marc
