Delaware legalizes gay marriage

DOVER, Del. — Delaware became the 11th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriage when Democratic Gov. Jack Markell signed a gay marriage bill into law just minutes after its passage by the state Senate on Tuesday.

"I do not intend to make any of you wait one moment longer," a smiling Markell told about 200 jubilant supporters who erupted in cheers and applause following the 12-9 Senate vote barely half an hour earlier.

"Delaware should be, is and will be a welcoming place to live and love and to raise a family for all who call our great state home," Markell said.

Good for them. I'm not particularly interested in the subject (it seems a bit of a non-issue to me) but good for them anyway.

That said, I equally hope that no-one will be forced into accommodating gay marriage either.

What does "forced into accommodating" mean?

If we are talking about an insurance company being "forced" to extend benefits to the same-sex spouse of a policy holder, I am quite content to see that accommodation forced upon them. If we are talking about a hospital being "forced" to accept instructions from a patient's same-sex spouse, and "forced" into releasing the body of a deceased into the custody of a same-sex widow, I'm all for it. (Not mention the simple courtesy of visiting). If we're talking about a B&B being forced to honour their contract with a same-sex couple, force away.

But if we're talking about forcing raging homophobes to change their minds about liking the gays, I am content to leave them to their prejudices.

There will always be raging homophobes, no matter which state legalizes gay marriage.

Congratulations Delaware!

Glad Delaware is joining the club of enlightened states, like my own Washington. 8)

Yes! Good for you, Delaware!

Now if we can only get California to re-legalize gay marriage and the other states to legalize it ...

... or any state in Australia to legalise it. Or Australia as a whole, for that matter (which won't happen any time soon).
Nowhere in Australia has same-sex marriage been legalised. At least the same can't be said for neighbouring New Zealand.

Nonetheless, I'm happy to see progress being made on different fronts: Uruguay, New Zealand, France, Rhode Island, Delaware ... they've all jumped on board with marriage equality this year. Good luck for the state of Minnesota, next week. And soon for people in the UK and Colombia (barring any injunctions), too.

Entirely agree, with both the sentiments and wording. :wtg:
