Riot police clashed with tens of thousands of May Day protesters in Istanbul weeks ago. There have also been protests against the government's stance on the conflict in neighbouring Syria, a recent tightening of restrictions on alcohol sales and warnings against public displays of affection.

"This isn't just about trees anymore, it's about all of the pressure we're under from this government. We're fed up, we don't like the direction the country is headed in," said 18-year-old student Mert Burge, who came to support the protesters after reading on Twitter about the police use of tear gas.

"We will stay here tonight and sleep on the street if we have to," he said

In Montreal they'd proclaim Unlawful Assembly and that the march is 'illegal' according to P6, use flashbangs and kettle them, mass arrest them for hours, send them to the Centres Operationels located far away, a process that lasts for hours in tie-wraps with no toilets, no food, no water. The people are usually fined $637. Turkey's authorities I think wish they had the kinds of repressive laws Canada has, laws such as Unlawful Assembly and laws against "interference with police" which can be used to criminalise asking police for their badge number, taking pictures, not moving quickly enough.

The police clearly are an enemy, an army of occupation.

Who wants to bet that any crimes Erdogan commits will be ignored?

Erdogan has annoyed Israel repeatedly and has powerful Turkish pro-Western pro-Israeli opponents in Turkey's Deep State, so he will not get favourable press in the West. Not that the West supports most of the protesters and their demands except in as far as they can be useful to the Deep State. They as a matter of principle think that the park must go and that most of the protesters are riff-raff.

Not everything about Turkish politics is about Israel, you clown. You're obsessed with Israel. This has bugger all to do with Israel and everything to do with a sectarian, reactionary bigot.

I think Erdogan has to go. He and his party of 'moderate' Islamists are sending Turkey backwards.

and if you look around the park is only the tip of the iceberg(to start the protest) and the way the qov. handled it made the vast majority rise up. many cops have quit, and the tention is rising.

What I was trying to say in my last message was:

"More secularism for Turkey!" ("And improve your beer, too!")

The Deep State and the fascist military provides a power source that can assist the protesters... that is a fact. The problem is that if the fascists seize power they remain fascists.
