Labour stalwart Tony Benn dies at 88

Former Cabinet minister and veteran left-wing campaigner Tony Benn has died at home, his family has said.

The 88-year-old former Labour MP had been seriously ill.

Mr Benn became an MP in November 1950 and served in the Cabinet under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan.

He was a towering political giant. I wasn't a huge fan of many of his views, but I agreed with him on the EU.

Do you hear all the people celebrating his death?

Nope, neither do I.

Like his ideas or disagree with them, at least he was sincere. I guess that while Maggie and Tony Benn could not agree on much they both had in common the fact that they sincerely held the views that they expressed and tried to put into action.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

I spoke to Mr Benn last at the Nelson Mandela memorial they held in the Houses of Parliament, its always freezing in Westminster hall, especially in winter, when I saw how cold he was I insisted he warm himself for a while by my electric fire.

I did see him once after that and noticed how suddenly he had become frail looking.

One of my heroes. Apart for his support for Sinn Fein we shared every political view in a time when being a socialist and a supporter of left-wing politics was somewhat out of fashion. His diaries are a fascinating tale of politics in the UK from 1950 until the brief time when Gordon Brown was Prime Minister.

Thank you sir for your service, your insight into political life and your contributions to socialism.

What did he say?

He said he was freezing.

Another Mr Benn anecdote, he had commissioned a couple of brass wall plaques thanking all the staff at Parliament, even down to the cleaners, these plaques where looking a bit dull with age.
One day Mr Benn comes for one of his visits to the Houses of Parliament carrying an old plastic bag which he sets down next to these plaques.

As a Joke I said to him, "have you come to polish your plaques?"
"Yes" he said, I couldn't believe it when he then gets out some rag and a tin of brasso and starts polishing them!

As people passed by looking in astonishment I said, " People think MP's get a good pension, well look at poor Mr Benn, he,s had to come back as a cleaner"
He laughed.
