Austrian actor Maximilian Schell has died a age 83 in Insbrook, Austria. Usually cast in nefarious roles, I remember Schell best as Kinski, the Iron Cross craving Prussian officer in Cross Of Iron.
A fine actor, and he will be missed.

And as SS-Obergruppenführer Wilhelm Bittrich in the movie A Bridge Too Far.
I have that DVD. I don't think I've seenThe Iron Cross.

It was directed by Sam Peckinpah, who otherwise is best known for westerns like The Wild Bunch. And like his westerns, Cross Of Iron was full of graphic violence, with in depth character study, where the hero isn't entirely likeable, and the villain can come across as sympathetic.

a lot of people don't know about his musical side, he conducted orchestras and was a soloist as well.

My favorite was his role as Walt Harper the criminal mastermind in Topkapi.
