I think I am going to stop doing business with Amazon, if that is possible.

You're going to stop doing business with them because of the results of an automated algorithm?

No, really, I don't like them bringing down the brick and mortar bookstore mainly. I like books but I want to touch them before I buy them. Amazon has ruined that. I just thought this story was cute. But I don't like the idea of them recommending things for me based on my purchases. They have their paws in everything these days. Amazon is as bad as the NSA.

Then you probably don't want to buy anything off ebay either, since they do the same thing. Shop at Wallyworld's web page then pick up your order at wallyworld? Guess what? they do the same thing! Ordering a pizza from Domino's, Pizza Hut or Papa John's, either by phone, or by web? Guess what, they track your order history also. Even your locally owned supermarket tracks what you buy, every time you use your bonus card.

Just don't blame Amazon, since almost all retailers do this nowadays.

The only place that doesn't do it is your local library. Sure, they track what you check out, but once the item is returned, your name is no longer attached to the item in their circulation system.

However, libraries generally have a standard practice of sharing your checkout history with law enforcement upon request. So, they do track and save it.

I have never even been to Ebay website, and I have been on the internet since 1995. Walmart is 3 miles away. Pizza hut is 1/4 mile away. I wouldn't give Papa Johns a dime of my money. I don't mind my grocer tracking my card because they send me coupons for free items that I buy regularly. The books that I buy I have found on sites that only sell the kinds of books that I buy. It dismays me more that WP tracks its users. I think as long as we are not spamming we should be able to have as many names as we like. I just now bought a cell phone after 6 years without one. Paid cash, no contract and don't give my number to anyone. Just for emergency. If I need to go online with it I will use a wifi...
Sorry for the WOT

And if your local library is doing that, it's time to clean house of the entire library staff. The FBI tried doing this same thing several years ago to track terrorists. The American Library Association went to court to stop this practice, as it is an invasion of privacy. If a clerk at the circulation desk is doing, they should be reprimanded and retrained. If, after the reprimand and retraining the clerk continues to give that information, said clerk should be terminated.

I stopped ordering from Amazon when they started charging sales tax in California. It kind of defeats the entire purpose of shopping online.

But privacy concerns is another good reason. I'm pretty sure that most websites that track me, can't link my online activities to my real life. I don't give out my real details out online, not even to Facebook. But Amazon knows who I am and where I live. Because they have shipped stuff to me. If they decide to share that info, then thats a problem.

What the article really proves is how worthless all this tracking is. Amazon should just worry about selling stuff at low prices, and giving their users a good shopping experience, and not being a big brother and recommending products. Because they fail at that big time.

WP doesn't track its members or unregistered users.
