Sounds like a case of officious bureaucrats adhering to the letter of the law rather than the spirit of the law and they couldn't care less about the human suffering it causes. The judge should be strung up by his testicles and made to pay a release fee to the woman equal to the many thousands she's lost.

It would have cost them more to sell the place then the outstanding balance. I don't get why they didn't just write it off.

they are actually making tons of money
they just got a house someone paid them for 99% and can turn around and sell it again

my dads friend lost his truck in a similar way
he had 2 payments left and lost his job the bank reposed it on the first missed payment
