80% of antibiotics are used in meat production.Antibiotics may not work in the future because of the overuse of them.

if you want to do something about this very real and scary problem, you can join the union of concerned scientists.

I sign what petitions come my way,but unless the public says they don't want to buy and eat it there's not much can be done but to try and inform people.

Don't buy it. Money is the only language big business understands. Petition all you want, it will do no good. Regs do no good-- they just find wys to twist them to stifle smaller competitors and then its business as usual. Buy small, buy local, buy from someone you know.

Better still, if you have the room, raiseit yourself, while it is still legal to do so.

If you can' t do that, go vegetarian, or cook the living s**t out of your meat.

And pour alcohol on that skinned knee. Scrub it with castile (not that stupid antibacterial soap with triclosan, that is another part of the problem) and rinse with alcohol. Three times a day. Burns like hell, but I have never had to drag a child to the dostor with a wound infection.

Other then well visits, we try to avoid the doctor. Dunno about where you are at, but here they still like to throw antibiotics at everything. Makes me miss the hick doctors we had in WV and AR. They listened when I questionedthe need for antibiotics.

^All good advice.I don't get antibiotics from the doctor unless something looks green and about to fall off, just kidding. :D Never drug the kids in for a cold or other stuff like that.
I think in the last thirty years I have only used antibiotics maybe two or three times, for an abscesses wisdom tooth and a smashed toe.
Instead of running to the doctor we tried to avoid going. :D
We do have a great doctor in our little Arkansas town,we are very lucky to have him.
He's not gung-ho on pills.
I think that in some cases petitioned do help,if you take the time to sign you most likely vote,it has some pull.

I don't doubt for a minute that store bought meat isn't very healthy BUT when an article's title starts out with Meat Is Murder I tend to see a strong anti-meat agenda that might taint the truthfulness of the article.

If you read the article it has very good points.I suppose the "meat is murder" is for grabbing attention. It really wasn't anti-meat,more anti-antibiotic.

What good would overcooking your meat do? Depending on what kind of meat it is and how you're cooking it, you might even create harmful compounds on the surface if you really char it, to say nothing of simply ruining the food.

Supporting small local farmers is an excellent defense. The meat is better for you. The life is better for the animals (they actually get to be outside!) And it's a good idea to keep small local farmers in business to help your local economy and to prevent the agri-giants from having a total monopoly on our food supply.

.....

That won't help you. The exact same organisms are found on fruits and vegetables grown the agri-giant way (not applicable to your small local farm). This is because the water used to irrigate them is contaminated by the nearby animals. Many recent outbreaks involved fruits and vegetables.

don't.
Like dox47 notes, charring can produce problematic compounds. The normal type of cooking will be fine. Unground meat is safer than ground meat (if you must use agri-giant meat) since the bacteria remain on the surface and are guarenteed killed by the cooking. The example given in the article was ground meat and that is no coincidence. People aren't getting this from steak.

Most people cook poultry well done,I remember an older man joking that he wanted half a baked chicken, not a half baked chicken. :D If it's something like chicken soup or dumplings boiling the meat should kill any bacteria.I cook burgers all the way thru, but I like my steak rare.Hamburger can have meat from numerous cows in it.
Even proper cooking won't remove the antibiotics from the meat, buying antibiotic free meat or fish is a good idea if you can't raise your own.Two local stores here raise their own beef, pasture raised and antibiotic free.
I have chickens so my eggs are wholesome,I still lick the spoon from the cake bowl, not gonna do that with a store egg.I never worry about the venison my family harvests,I know where the meat came from and that it's fresh.
