Bernie has bought his freedom from bribery charges by paying £60million to the German judiciary. A bribe to free him from bribery charges!

But think about it - Bernie is 83 years old, and will probably not run out of money during his lifetime. Socially, he will probably suffer considerably (albeit much less than he would have suffered in prison).

But his family has been deprived of £60million of its expected inheritance (not to mention the legal costs).

It is arguable that such a result is a more meaningful penalty than locking the guy up for the rest of his life and allowing his family to continue to reap the financial rewards of his crime.

Bernie has done a great job running F1. I don't know the details of the bribery charges in Germany but relieved that it's all resolved and Bernie can go back to running the sport he loves. As you say, little point to locking up an 83 year old so best outcome is a hefty fine.
