Wikipedia states that he died of "asphyxiation, pending further investigation," in an unincorporated part of Tiburon, California.

He was a talented individual; why should he have taken his own life?

Eh?

Why would "talent" have anything to do with depression and suicide? Mental illness doesn't care who you are.

"Holly molly" is right!

Gosh!

This was the first thing I saw on WP today, and I hadnt heard about it. So I bolted from WP and looked up the online headlines. They mentioned that he "long battled drug abuse" and " which had been frank about" through his life. But thats it.

He was a true genius in standup comedy, and a great actor (dramatic, and comedic). I was a big fan. What a loss!

I don't follow many celebrities, but I liked him. This is very sad and disappointing news. :(

I heard it was asphyxia. :(

I'll miss him a lot, he pretty much filled my childhood.

Being an old git, I remember when he was on the New Laugh-In.

Very sad, I'm hoisting one in his memory. Why is it that comedians bring so much happiness, but enjoy so little themselves?

Oh, F**K. This is absolutely horrible to hear! :(((
I'm so rarely affected by mentions of deaths in the news, but this one just got me. Had to go flail and wail in melodramatic humor on the bed for a while so that my negative emotions would become humorous through sheer dent of will. Seems to have worked, but wow. Definitely going to have to go on a commiseratory drive, tonight.
He just brought a lot of light to the world, and yet the beacons that shine brightest rarely ever see the positives they put forth. ugh i'm getting poetic now. that can't be a good sign

Also, very poignant link, Prof_Pretorius. I'm probably going to "hoist one" as well and go on a R.W. video binge, tonight. Only seems fitting!

I have to admit one of the thoughts I had immediately after finding out about this was: "If a man as loved, rich and playful as Robin Williams loses the battle, what chance do I have?"

I'll miss him.
