I hope it's not too late for the US to claim they "accidentally" invaded Iraq.

Those 170 troops could have taken over that whole country in short order.

Really? And who would they have fought? You can't win a battle when the other side has no army. :P

They would have had to find someone to sell them ammo too as the article says they had their assault weapons but no ammo. Somehow I don't think stores selling it are not as common there as in the US :)

Per a write up I saw a little while back. It could be mistaken but I think it's pretty accurate. Every swiss male who has done his requirement of military service gets issued his assault rifle for him to keep until the age of 45.

Ammo might be pretty common over there.

Well at least they were honest, but maybe we are seeing a fundamental shift of power in the northern Hemisphere. :P even the Romulans should be afraid.

One of the Central American countries, it might be Costa Rica, does not have any army. Just a police force. The reason they can do this is because they is someone actually tries to invade them the U.S. will immediately intervene.

The Canal was turned back over to Panama by treaty in the Carter administration. Strictly speaking this did not have to happen because the original agreement granted the Canal Zone to the United States in perpetuity. However, the next administrations, including the Reagan administration (Reagan strongly opposed the treaty) followed through the treaty as written as is the custom. The canal zone was handed over to Panamanian control in 1999 as agreed.

The United States has not touched the canal despite the fact that Chinese state corporations are involved in it's operations.

This has nothing to do with Panama. The United States' military might merely assures a lessening of the likelihood of military conflicts across borders in this hemisphere. Terrible wars were fought in the 19th century in South America that we would not wish repeated. This is not to deny that bloodshed has occurred, the most notable example perhaps being the incredible bloody Mexican Civil War in the early 20th century.
