2014 to be hottest year on record, per WMO

And the 38th straight year above average:

Nevertheless, I remember how cool this summer was in my part of the USA, and so was a bit pleased to see this:

How long have temperature records been kept. We did not have reliable thermometers prior to the middle of the 18 th century and we had no thermometers prior to the 17 th century.

So what does "hottest year on record" really mean. I can say without hesitation that during the eruption of the Siberian Traps the temperature was much hotter than it is now.
