A 12-year-old boy has killed himself after schoolmates bullied him for being a cheerleader, according to friends.

Ronin Shimizu, a former student at Folsom Middle School in Folsom, California, took his life on Wednesday afternoon but police are not releasing any further details about his death.

The school district has confirmed that the boy's parents, who also have a younger son, complained on multiple occasions that he was being bullied and officials said that they followed protocol.

But friends say that the taunting continued. He recently left Folsom Middle School to be home schooled.

This case happened in a suburb of my hometown. Somebody on a local news site comment board put it best: "Middle school is hell on earth". I know that when I was in middle school, I was mercilessly bullied by the kids AND THE TEACHERS (!) until I had a nervous breakdown and spent three weeks in a psych ward. I was never quite the same.

I don't understand, in an era when gays can marry and adopt kids, why it's still ok to use "gay" and "f@g" as insults among kids. So the kid was a cheerleader, so what, many colleges have male cheerleaders who participate in some of the riskier dance moves that are done that require strength that the females don't have.

It seems that bullying is a lot worse than it was in my day, and also there weren't the suicides and murder-suicides involving bullied kids. I wonder if kids aren't being taught how to take disappointment and how to deal with haters. For example, that kid near Seattle whose gf dumped him for his cousin, so he went to school and killed a bunch of kids then himself. I remember when a guy I knew had his gf dump him for his little brother, I know we talked about blowing her up but it was just dumb teenage guy talk. Today it seems that the first thing a guy does if he faces rejection is to start shooting.

That was certainly my experience. Although back in the 60's I don't think that had "Middle School" It was junior high. But either way - the 7th grade was absolutely the most painful year of my life - and not one adult ever lifted one finger to help me. But in 1967 - that was probably the norm.

The news report on the video says that the parents had been making multiple complaints about this poor little kid being bullied going back to his elementary years.

I hope the bullying situation has gotten better. But I do hear some terrible stories like this one.

Also, I have to agree, middle school was literally hell on earth for me. What's worse was that the bullying, stigma, trauma, depression, etc ALL those problems manifested themselves so bad that they still affect me to this day. My sh***y ass experience began in 6th grade (2008), and 6 years after I STILL haven't recovered. I've begun to doubt whether I'll actually make a full recovery.

f**k middle school, just f**k middle school. I wish I could destroy every middle school that exists.

Junior high was absolutely the worst time of my life. The only way I had to cope with the teasing, bullying, and humiliation was by being chronically absent by playing sick. I'm amazed I was able to pass on to high school because of my absences! With me, I was perceived as being ret*d (the fact that I was two years older than my classmates due to being held back and spending a short stint in special ed didn't make things any better) as no one equated high functioning autism with me back in those days, the dicks figured they could dehumanize me in the same this poor kid was when he was perceived as gay. My heart honestly goes out to this poor twelve year old who took his own life. I'm very glad that my daughter's school has zero tolerance for bullying today, as she is in a special ed class for autistic kids.

Wow people are disgusting, I hope those people get paid back in bad karmah or whatever the hell, but this is the real world many of those who participated in the bullying will likely go on to become well adjusted successful members of society with no guilt at all for their part in this....so kinda futile to wish they'll get their pay back, they probably wont.

Yeah Middle School can suck it. As an autistic catholic in a baptist school I was bullied and taunted relentlessly. Somehow I didn't kill myself but still it was hell, I began trying to assimilate myself into them in order for them to stop. I read Twilight, thought it was crap, but I still read it and said I liked it. They still didn't stop though, one teacher got in on the action by making fun of how fat I was. You know what Mokelumne River can go F**K OFF!! !

The day any teacher ridicules my daughter for her weight, or for any reason, is the day that teacher gets fired.

It's tragic, hopefully this will weigh on the minds of his tormenters the rest of their lives. As progressive you may personally be, I would never let my son do cheerleading or wear girl's clothes or whatever in fear of something like this especially in middle school. You just have to protect a child unfortunately.

Not sure if that's accurate, or if it was just better hidden back in the days before youtube and ubiquitous cameras on every phone and tablet.

I've actually had teachers make negative remarks about schizophrenic and autistic people. What's worse is that these people are actually nicely educated. This is in high school.

To me it's gotten worse because of all the social networking and s**t. I'm not saying Facebook, Twitter, etc is all evil but it's effect on making an already toxic environment in school worse I think deserves part of the blame. In the end, we need to change school big time. Autistic people and others are suffering in the seas of evil.

Again, I'll say this again: middle school can go f**k itself. I'm so glad I'm not the only autistic person who's life was ruined by middle school; trading war stories.

These are my thoughts as well, I didn't even know male cheerleaders were a thing!

It's just asking for trouble, bullies see a skinny frail looking kid doing that, they are going to crucify him nine times out of ten. Not to blame the victim at all, but honestly, school staff should know better than to create ripe grounds for bullying, in a better world we wouldn't need to have foresight like this but come on... it's pretty much a no-brainer, boy doing girly things amongst his peers = bad times for the boy.

Can't expect the boy to realize that this is not a nice world, but it's an adult's duty to have that perspective for them well in advance.

it seems there are more and more school districts that are just ASKING FOR LAWSUITS.
