How can anyone think that joining a terrorist cell would be a good idea... and why is this extremely brutal and cruel terrorist cell so popular for women to join?
Do they not realize that they'll be brutalized?

Lessee...

The numbers of foreigners recruited by ISIS numbers in the... few hundred???

Most come from Europe. Most come from the Muslim minority in Europe, but some from the non muslim majority.

Europe has half of a billion people. And ISIS recruits a few hundred?

And the percentage who are girls? One article says ten percent. Fifty percent of humanity is female- but only ten percent of ISIS recruits are female- about the ratio you would expect.

There are always the one in a million person who will do crazy stuff.

Well, first of all they almost certainly do not believe ISIS to actually be a 'terrorist group', but rather some kind of heroic resistance movement, as absurd as that may seem to most of us. It would also not at all surprise me if the vast majority of these volunteers naively believed they were embarking upon some kind of grand adventure, and that almost anything was preferable to their mundane, empty lives in boring suburbia.

This makes sense. However, I think the psychology of the fans of serial killers who indulge in romantic fantasies about them and engage in bizarre relationships with them by mail may offer an alternative explanation. There is a common element of narcissism in both types of fantasy, but one is more actively attracted to things they see as tansgressive and even evil.

My point is the media referred to them as "foreigners" which may be a little misleading. For example almost all the Australian men joining ISIS are actually first generation Syrians, Iraqies and Lebanese, many of whom are related to people already in the ranks of ISIS.

In the Netherlands people often refer to immigrants and their descendants as foreigners, especially if they look different from the locals. It's not correct but pretty common.

And they make it harder to find songs by the post-metal band of the same name! unforgivable!

Even if they have been brainwashed you shouldn't feel sorry for them, because the world will become a better place - a MUCH better place - when people who are so easily led astray disappear from the face of it. The fact that many, if not most, of these idiots quickly get killed when they go over there is good news as far as I am concerned.
