Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Wednesday said the cybersecurity executive order that the White House is drafting is "close to completion."

At a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, Napolitano said the executive order is "still being drafted in the inter-agency process" and "is close to completion depending on a few issues that need to be resolved at the highest levels."

He tried to ram this through Congress, but Republicans blocked him.

Well... This is awkward.

Not to mention even the simple IT guys at Geek Squad know that a "kill-switch" is impossible. The internet is not this..

Yeah, and considering an executive order is essentially the same thing as a law (except it can be recended by another President at any time or congress can overturn it), the idea of this being "voluntary," is rather laughable.

The Americans with Disabilities Act is considered "voluntary," however if you do any business with the Federal Government at all, it becomes mandatory.

Furthermore, while the reasoning the article gives:

The White House is crafting a draft executive order aimed at protecting the nation from cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure, such as the electric grid, water systems and transportation networks. The order would create a voluntary program in which companies operating key infrastructure would elect to meet a set of security standards developed, in part, by the government.

The article does not mention the end result would give the President the ability to shut down the internet whenever he deems there is a "national emergency."

Furthermore the article also failed to mention this is a rehash of the Executive Order that got torpedoed after he issued it back in July.

Anyways, I'm going to be quite blunt, if we substituted in George W. Bush instead of Obama, you would be jumping up and down that Bush was trying to seize control of the internet.

Yes and no, the situation is that many of the key servers are located in the US, shut down the servers and you take down a lot of the internet.

What news source is "reliable", then? Maybe a list should be composed, for everyone to adhere to.

Obama is almost as close to pure evil as you get. This *will* happen. It is indeed very sad, and very ominous, to see the ignorance of his corruption, all over the world, and the forgetfulness over what he has proven to stand behind. Unfortunately, Romney is even more evil, so no use for anyone living in the U.S. to even bother voting, this year - if one does, I suggest voting for Godzilla, like one poster on this forum suggested.

From what I have seen in my life, I believe my part in this facade is to say "How could possibly believe that about Obama you conservative Romniac republicanheaded conservative-face"

However, I am going to break from the script a little bit if only for variety's sake

While Obama hasn't exactly been everything he promised he would be in 2008, He simply cannot be called evil. Nither can Romney. The real problem with the system is all the hatred and mistrust that has so thickly permeated American politics that it asphyxiates any kind of empathy for "THE OTHER SIDE" (dun-Dun-DUHN).

I used to think Romney was evil. But then my father, who I respect greatly, told me he was going to vote Romney. After we talked about it, we both agreed to watch the Conventions in order to become well informed. I watched Romney and Ryan's speech and I realized that it was wrong to say he is evil. Am I going to Vote for him? No. But I do believe that He believes in what he is saying. Not enough for me to vote for him, but enough for me to respect him.

As for Obama, I don't know what it is about him that give conspiracy theorists such a jolly-good day, but if he was guilty of half the things he was accused of, the signs would be a lot more obvious. plus, I respect the work his wife is doing with the whole "Get the youth of america to eat right again" movement.

In short, If I am to be held guilty of any hatemongering in this post, it should be me saying that I pity you Beauty_pact. That much negativity is nothing short of poisonous.

If he shuts down the Internet...a whole lot of people will hate him. Mubarak shut down Egypt's Internet-and it made the protests get even bigger.

If there is one way to assure a riot, it's taking away the peoples porn. Taking away the internet would mean no porn, no Facebook, no Google, no Amazon, no Reddit, no Tumblr, no Netflix, no Xbox Live, no PS3 live, no Steam, half of modern PC games would be rendered unplayable (you need internet access to play them, even if they're single player), iPhones and Androids would be useless, etc. America is way more dependent on the internet than Egypt ever was. Take it away and D.C. would be in flames. You can agree or disagree with Obama's politics, but you do have to agree that Obama is not a stupid man. He knows exactly what would happen to him and his family, specifically, if every American was denied access to the internet. Pikes would be metaphorically placed in front every federal government building.

Just a fraction of the evil of Obama and his crowd (NOT saying that almost any Republican is better - most are not, just like most Democrats are not):

Obama and nude scanners (I remember that he even had stocks in a naked scan company, by the way, but I couldn't find that in my one search):

Here is also a good news blog that finally gave up reporting, last year... such a pity. Enjoy browsing their old stuff, though:

I could find more for you, but I don't feel like it. If you want to know more, do your own searches. Good luck.

If the government actually shut down the Internet, I think massive riots would be the most likely outcome.

Forget the riots. The economy would come to a screeching halt. The Internet is such an integrated part of the ongoing economy that it is as vital as water or the phone system. If the internet went down toot sweet the economic consequence would produce costs in the hundreds of billions of $$$ if not trillions.

Internet is as important to our daily lives as the phone system.

Pikes metaphorically placed? The pikes I would use would be quite literal.
