Quote:
FBI Launches Investigation After Video Shows California Deputies Beating Man
The investigation will look into whether the civil rights of Francis Pusok were violated during the pursuit and altercation with deputies, FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller said in a written statement.

The investigation comes after 10 San Bernardino County deputies were placed on administrative leave after they were recorded beating Pusok, who appeared to have surrendered in a pursuit involving a stolen horse.

... "I'm deeply disturbed by this video," McMahon said. "If there is criminal wrongdoing in part of our deputy sheriffs, or any policy violations, we will take action."

I haven't watched the video and I don't think I will.

Kind of funny how that attitude toward horse thieves is still prevalent in my part of the country, the far west. When my dad had grown up in rural eastern Washington in the early 20th century, he had grown up with stories of vigilantes stringing up horse thieves not many decades earlier.

How does he feel about them only being beaten these days?

I found an article on horse theft on Wikipedia accompanied by a picture of a hanging in Oregon circa 1900.

He can't feel anything about it, because he died years ago.

Well, we're all going to die. Anyway, here's a video of the event. I hope the horse is alright.

My understanding is that the perp was caught doing something illegal by the cops, and tried to flee in a car, across the desert. The Mojave is quite rocky and rough in the backcountry, and apparently he got to a point where his car wouldn't go any more. So he took somebody's horse, and tried to flee on the horse. As for the beating, it seems like it might be a case of "roid rage", which means the episodes of uncontrollable rage experienced by steroid junkies. Many cops use steroids, and when they get in that rage they literally cannot stop. It doesn't matter if the perp is resisting, they just beat him and beat him. Cops experiencing roid rage have beaten people to death and beyond, pounding the guy even after he not only is not resisting but can no longer resist. I think that steroid use among cops may be a worse problem than dirty/corrupt cops.

Any cop caught using steroids needs to be fired.

Just cops being cops, and don't tell me it was just a few bad apples. All of the cops at the scene were either beating the guy, or watching other cops beat him, and doing nothing to stop it.

He must have really pissed them off. The horse is reportedly doing just fine, thank God.

This is just getting more and more out of hand. At least the FBI is looking into this, but something needs to be done before everything goes to pieces many times over.

Unfortunately for the suspect the only 11 officers involved in the pursuit just happened to be the only 11 "bad apples" in the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department. The rest of the police are good. Or I guess that's what we're supposed to think....

Is anyone checking facts?

This Washington Post Article, for example.

The incident began when deputies arrived at a residence to serve a search warrant as part of an identity-theft investigation on Thursday.

Pusok fled the scene in a vehicle, before ditching the car, fleeing on foot and eventually stealing a horse.

Pusok continued to evade deputies, riding the horse four to five miles of sometimes steep, rocky and rugged terrain.

Pusok and he fell off the stolen horse.

He then appears to be hit with a Taser and falls to the ground.

He is seen with his hands initially outstretched but puts them behind his back just before the first two officers on the scene appear to begin beating and kicking him.

During a prior domestic call, Pusok made threats to kill a deputy sheriff.

Pusok Also shot a puppy in front of family.

Pusok was treated at a local hospital for abrasions and bruises, then booked on multiple criminal charges, including felony evasion, theft of a horse, possession of stolen property.

He also has an active warrant for reckless driving.

His bail was set at $115,000.

There is no evidence that the police were on steroids, but it does appear that Pusok has a history of violence, including with firearms. Couple that with the death threat against a deputy sheriff, and he should consider himself lucky to not be shot.

The Washington Post has a reputation for slanting the news against the West Coast a way, so citing its article as a reference seems only fair.

The police are doing this man a favor by beating him and making him look like a victim.

Not smart.

More fact checking ...

According to This New York Daily News Article, 10 of the sherrif's deputies have been suspended.

Quote:
Nearly a dozen California deputies were suspended after a video emerged showing several officers beating a suspect for more than a minute after he was hit by a Taser and apparently surrender.

Francis Jared Pusok, a convicted felon who is a suspect in an identity theft case, fled from San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies first by car, then on foot, then on horseback on Thursday afternoon.

[...]

A convicted felon, Pusok has a rap sheet that includes an arrest for shooting his girlfriend’s dog during a 2013 incident in which he also kicked out the window of a police cruiser ...

Again, Pusok is lucky to be alive.

But it's going to be another long, hot summer of civil unrest and violence.
