Hawaii School Allegedly Forced Student With Autism To Run On A Treadmill Until He Collapsed

The school was just interpreting the "experts" advice(sarcasm)

Quote:
The nonprofit Autism Research Institute (ARI) considers exercise to be “one of the most effective treatments for autistic people,” citing studies that show “vigorous or strenuous exercise is associated with decreases in stereotypic (self-stimulatory) behaviors, hyperactivity, aggression, self-injury, and destructiveness.”

The institute defines vigorous exercise as an aerobic workout of 20 minutes or longer, three to four days a week. Mild exercise has "little effect on behavior,” according to ARI.

Autism Speaks, an autism advocacy group, also touts the benefits of physical therapy. It notes that “sports and exercise should not replace proven behavioral interventions, but may be effective supplements to these therapies and potentially enhance the benefits.”

I do think exercise is important for many of the reasons described, but 3 miles in 25 minutes, carrying a heavy suitcase and backpack? Are you f*****g kidding me? I'd imagine it's hard to be hyperactive when you're broken to the point of exhaustion.

Hypoglycemia? Did they try to starve the poor guy to death? You can certainly reduce autism rates if you let people f*****g DIE. And I don't get the settlements, people should close down the school and put the torturers in jail.

Well, if Autism Speaks is mentioned it's got to be bad news.

How about trying to understand them as a human being, instead of an animal.

Exercise is supposed to reduce stimming? What's wrong with stimming?

Absolutely nothing. Maybe it leads to higher thresholds of sensory discomfort, thereby reducing the need for stimming.

So, to stop the stimming all you have to do is make sure the person is perpetually severely exhausted and fatigued?
