Premier Rachel Notley? Of the beyond-liberal New Democratic Party? In Alberta?

Yes, yes, and yes: By virtue of winning 53 seats out of 87 in last night's provincial election,
Rachel Notley defeated now ex-Premier Jim Prentice. In the process, 44 consecutive years
of Progressive Conservative government in Alberta were terminated (as in Hasta la vista, baby)

what in your opinion is likely to be the practical effect of this?

Me? Actually, I have to admit I'm very ignorant about politics in Canada - the only two Canadian politicians I know of are that drunk/drug addict Rob Ford, and their former Prime Minister who sounded like Pepe Le Pew - and so I can only go on what the news has been saying, that this is a momentous turn of events.

I am wondering if it is in part a reaction to the rightward trend south of the border, in that the Canadians in disgust with America's follies decided to go in another direction? I wonder what effect this will have on trade/commerce between us?

Their disgust with the way the American right behaves might very well have played a role. As for future trade - I understand that the newly elected liberals aren't planning to push the Keystone pipeline down American throats if it's not wanted in this country.

Don't forget us in the Spokane area (the rest of the east side of the state might as well be in Idaho).

America's behavior had nothing to do with this result and Albertans would think it is typical America hubris for an American to think that it did. Canadians think about America less often than you might think.

Trade and commerce will not be affected in any way.

Well, this was just a provincial election in Alberta -- the federal government remains the same (conservative) and the conservatives are in power in other provinces.

It was local follies that drove the change, stuff like: financial scandals (Jim Prentice was not the premier until last year when Alison Redford resigned in disgrace and he was elected as the new leader by the party); an increase in taxes for everyone but corporations; talk of introducing healthcare premiums; cuts to social/health services; poor campaigning and the decision to call the election at all (it was a called a year early).

Most people use the term "liberal" up here in Canada to refer to the Liberal party, who have typically taken a more or less center point on the political spectrum (except in BC where the provincial Liberal party are actually conservatives, albeit maybe moderate conservatives). The NDP are on the left (typically much farther left than the Liberals) and the Conservatives are on the right.

The only tax hikes planned thus far are increases in the highest tax brackets (the wealthiest 10% of Albertans, and corporations). And actually, the tax hike promised by the conservatives for everyone except corporations was one of the reasons the NDP were elected in the first place -- so, even if the NDP do increase everyone's taxes, Albertans are no worse off in that respect.

IMHO, the people who carp among the loudest over tax hikes on the 1% upper class, are those 99%ers suffering under the illusion that they themselves one day will be among the 1% Richie-riches laboring under such higher taxes.

Gotta think they have a be delusional to some degree to seriously believe that.
