I went to school here in OK so I know how ridiculous it can be and this is absolutely one of the most...I wanted to use a word but thought Wrongplanet might not like it so I struggle to find an appropriate adjective. For one thing, it's disgusting for me to even fathom touching a dead animal. I loathed biology in jr high because we were presented with frogs and earth worms but they were pumped so full of bloody chemicals it made me so incredibly sick every day we were forced to undergo the process of dissection for a grade (and it was required.) Got migraine headaches, nausea. It was just absolutely one of the most horrible experiences of my life! Hard to believe one little earth worm could cause all that but there were something like twenty of them in class and they all were drenched in formaldehyde so that's the first thing I think of when seeing this video. I remember those horrific chemicals that dissolved my insides, or at least that's how it felt. I sincerely hope these cats were not preserved with formaldehyde or the students were allowed gas masks. I can't tell from the video because their faces are blurred.
Most people in my biology class were squeamish about the dead things and didn't really care to become that involved. Just do what you have to for a grade then leave it for the staff to clean up. It's so weird these students would want to flop the cats around and dance with them. If I were in that class, they would kick me out because I wouldn't participate. I complained daily when we had do dissect in jr high and I got kicked out of that class and put into one without dissecting all simply because I could not handle the chemicals. Anyone that goes against it in this high pressure school, it's the best in the state, would have, most likely risked their enrollment in the school so they had no choice but to go along with something so dumb just for the sake of the grade and being allowed to continue the program and educational goals. Must tolerate that stupidity in order to graduate and it's not just a little bit of banal stupidity. It goes beyond that.
I am one of those people that's ok with the idea high schools and lower rely on other methods of educating besides dissecting because it seems like the only reason it still goes on is due to the fact it's an industry and the corporations want those government customers. There's really no point unless you are going to vet school and you have plenty of opportunity to dissect in college zoology classes. I used to think, what does this earth worm teach me about human anatomy? Nothing! Why do I need to know what the inside of an earth worm looks like and how to cut it down the middle and pin it open only to see the insides that, quite candidly, reminded me of a jar of olives or something, in some ways. It had an olive like texture to it. I felt like I was wasting my time. I had no desire to see the inside of an earth worm. Even if I were to go to vet school, how often would I find myself treating an earth worm? Probably never. So I just felt I was getting headaches and nausea for no good reason.
You have to wonder, how much does each earth worm cost anyway?
And if you are going to make something dance on camera, why not just make it an earth worm and leave it at that?
