No due process for indigent defendants in the United States

In most states, you are charged money (which you will be charged for an inability to pay later if you're indigent and then for which you would be jailed if you're indigent) for having a public defender, who in most cases simply will not be able to effectively represent you:

This was interesting.

It caused me to research a lot about funding for public defenders.

The problem is that defendants are a politically unpopular group, so they come last for funding.
