Bina48 is a social android robot designed to incorporate the attitudes, beliefs, and mannerisms of a real person, Bina Rothblat. Bina48 has been around for about five years and she is capable of learning and evolving. Apparently it is going well, because she/it has recently stated that her/its greatest accomplishment to date is the achievement of sentience!

Here is a link to a Ted talk with Bina48.

in 20 years or even 10 years I wonder how much progress will be made in this regard?

Sorry, I couldn't watch it all. It scared the crap out of me.

It reminded me of those scary newborn dolls that used to be sold where I worked. They looked like evil little "Child's Play" type dolls, and were supposed to be appealing to children. They were absolutely hideous and looked as if they wanted to eat your face.

That is exactly how I feel about this robot.

it undoubtedly was pre-programmed with Asimov's 3 laws of robotics.

That is what I thought after the initial awe of watching Bina48. But how do we know if we cross the threshold? Andriods do bring up a lot of philosophical questions. I look forward someday to talking to one like Jules the Robot:

And androids are being used to help autistic people with social learning, apparently. Anyone have any info on that aspect?

who knows where this will lead, at least among those of us who are wealthy enough to partake of the new techy dawn.

I had avoided looking at videos on that dimension of android use, but no doubt, it will be very popular. Maybe it is a good thing. Males and females are constructed with differing drives which can be problematic for both sexes. Androids could fill the void, so to speak. My guess, within 10 years, anyone will be able to buy a sexbot or a philosopher Jules companion android or any other at Walmart for somewhere between $199 and $1,999. 100 years and maybe humans and androids will be indistinguishable and immortality will have been achieved.

a realdoll costs 7 grand, why would a bona fide android cost so much less?

the MBA types and economists are expecting the price to be at an entry level luxury car level, say 40-50 000 USD for a all-purpose HomeAndrobot.

I think "Elysium" hit the nail right on the head.
