My heart is bleeding for a 15-year-old autistic boy living in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia who was given a golf ball packed with explosive given to him by a 'mate' to play with.
The family of this beautiful young man say he has a 'heart of gold'.
There is an interview with him, in typical aspie detailer style, on a website called Live Leak.
The 'mate' told Michael he'd found heroin in the golf ball and invited him to sniff it.
So the planned attack seems to have been for it to blow up in his victim's face!
It blew up instead when Michael was tossing it up and down.
This incident reminds me of a similar sadistic act performed on me designed to harm me and make others laugh at me when I was around 21.
The perpetrator was an English male in his mid-20s, a mate of one of my girlfriend's boyfriend.
He gave me a matchbox and said to hold two matches with my fingers against each side, then to balance another one on top of them, then strike it downwards with my other hand.
You can guess what happened.
Fingers badly burnt, loud humiliating laughter, shocked and wanting to cry but meant to join in the laughter.
Aspies are sitting ducks for this type of sadistic behaviour because we desperately want to be liked and have friends, and therefore lack discernment about people.
We also have difficulty thinking on our feet and in anticipating consequences.
Perhaps we can send Michael messages of support.
I'll try and find out how.

And this is why I don't trust half the people I meet in real life and why I've learned to pay attention to people's facial expressions to see if they are enjoying something too much. Neither you or this boy are alone on this one.

He lost both hands.

The explosive also had ball bearings, which inflicted more injuries as shrapnel.

the perpetrator of this outrage needs to be placed into a room, then that room needs to be thrown away.

That wasn't meant as a joke. If you wanted to play a joke, you'd put maybe a firecracker in there or something. Not gunpowder and ball bearings. That was meant to hurt, and was probably a case of attempted murder, considering how the boy was encouraged to put it near his face.

The "joke" thing was an excuse they most likely used afterwards to try to get out of trouble. I have actually seen multiple cases in which somebody committed a felony and tried to get out of it by claiming it had been meant as a prank.

Indeed. I'm reminded of milder "pranks" of this nature described in Attwood's Complete Guide. Bullies would give an already opened bag of potato chips or a can of soda to this girl. The chips would have cayenne pepper on them and there would be stinging insects (I forget which kind - wasps, maybe) in the can of soda.

These things are done with intent to harm, not as a joke or a prank. This incident was attempted murder.

VERY tragic story. Very sad.

I also noticed this bit in the same report: "Michael, 15, suffers from autism and Asperger syndrome."

There's that report, yet again, of us suffering from what's built into us. Next time I see a black person I'm going to ask him, "Hey, how does it fee to suffer from blackness?" Or maybe I'll just wit till I run into a gay person and ask, "Hey, I feel bad for you because you're suffering from homosexuality."

If I come home all bloodied and bruised I'd understand why.

Why the hell has the scum that did this not been arrested. "Police are continuing their enquiries"! If there's enough time for the story to get to the media and the poor boy has had at least one surgery already, there's been more than enough time to arrest that evil bottom-feeder.

Probably because for some reason that will never make any rational sense, people view bullying as something "less bad" than a felony even though most bullying does qualify as a felony.

...and also he will no doubt claim lack of malicious intent because it was a "joke" so they will not want to contravene his human rights poor boy, he was just playing, he's only a teenager and didn't fully understand the repercussions - as well as believing his story that he didn't make the bomb he just happened upon in on the roadside. Yeah right.

There is no justice in this world.

Oh c'mon, you can't seriously compare giving someone spiced up potato chips with handing them a bomb??! The potato chips thing is an innocent prank, I gave other children chili caramels myself, as well as uneatable chocolate. It's not an uncommon joke. A boy in a class I went to was given salt pills (he knew what it was and insisted on trying), then they gave him something to drink where they had already put a salt pill. It was innocent fun.

No one should mix up harmless jokes and felonies.

Giving someone what is effectively a small bomb (selling them the object actually, according to the link above) is not a joke/prank. It's not even bullying.
It's a serious criminal offence that in this case caused grievous bodily harm, and could even be considered attempted murder.

Yeah. Obviously he suffers from living among sadistic bastards. This reminds me of the story of that kid who got set on fire at the party. I can't understand where all that viciousness even comes from; as many times as I might see it it still seems bizarre.
