hey nurseangela, I had a (for me) interesting conversation and learned why exactly Jacoby thinks Trump is acceptable - IF I got it right, it's precisely because he's transgressive, and therefore supposedly capable of changing the global system in a meaningful way in favour of the avrage American. His racist and sexist utterances, if anything, make him appear the perfect rule-ignoring hero to get that job done. No, I don't believe that that is ultimately his aim, but I can see how, if there is enough resentment, above argumentation might explain why one would not just not care about how horrible Trump is, but how his horriblenes would actually be the prerequisite for the figure that some of his followers want him to be.

Does that also apply to you? is his racism and sexism also the necessary transgression that makes him appear as the "one to break up the system" to you?
and if so, what makes you think a guy who got rich off navigating the system in his favour, and has shown great egoism while doing so, would actually use his skills in your favour and not just his personal gain?
thanks

Barack Obama was quoting the following section from his 1995 autobiography:

Dreams from my Father (1995) wrote:
Only Malcolm X’s autobiography seemed to offer something different. His repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me; the blunt poetry of his words, his unadorned insistence on respect, promised a new and uncompromising order, martial in its discipline, forged through sheer force of will. All the other stuff, the talk of blue-eyed devils and apocalypse, was incidental to that program, I decided, religious baggage that Malcolm himself seemed to have safely abandoned toward the end of his life. And yet, even as I imagined myself following Malcolm’s call, one line in the book stayed me. He spoke of a wish he’d once had, the wish that the white blood that ran through him, there by an act of violence, might somehow be expunged. I knew that, for Malcolm, that wish would never be incidental. I knew as well that traveling down the road to self-respect my own white blood would never recede into mere abstraction. I was left to wonder what else I would be severing if and when I left my mother and my grandparents at some uncharted border.

And, too: If Malcolm’s discovery toward the end of his life, that some whites might live beside him as brothers in Islam, seemed to offer some hope of eventual reconciliation, that hope appeared in a distant future, in a far-off land. In the meantime, I looked to see where the people would come from who were willing to work toward this future and populate this new world. After a basketball game at the university gym one day, Ray and I happened to strike up a conversation with a tall, gaunt man named Malik who played with us now and again. Malik mentioned that he was a follower of the Nation of Islam but that since Malcolm had died and he had moved to Hawaii he no longer went to mosque or political meetings, although he still sought comfort in solitary prayer.

One of the guys sitting nearby must have overheard us, for he leaned over with a sagacious expression on his face.

“You all talking about Malcolm, huh? Malcolm tells it like it is, no doubt about it.”
“Yeah,” another guy said. “But I tell you what-you won’t see me moving to no African jungle anytime soon. Or some goddamned desert somewhere, sitting on a carpet with a bunch of Arabs. No sir. And you won’t see me stop eating no ribs.”
“Gotta have them ribs.”
“And p****, too. Don’t Malcolm talk about no p****? Now you know that ain’t gonna work.”

I noticed Ray laughing and looked at him sternly. “What are you laughing at?” I said to him. “You’ve never read Malcolm. You don’t even know what he says.”

Ray grabbed the basketball out of my hand and headed for the opposite rim. “I don’t need no books to tell me how to be black,” he shouted over his head. I started to answer, then turned to Malik, expecting some words of support. But the Muslim said nothing, his bony face set in a faraway smile.

So not only was Obama (1) not making any claims that one should act indecently towards women (as Donald Trump did), he was (2) referring to a statement made by someone else, and he was (3) using an English vocabulary above the grade school level (unlike Donald Trump)...

Angela is the typical Trump supporter- 2 wrongs = a right according to most of them.

They can't admit to their problems, so they try to focus attention on something else. So sickening.

...I haven't read this whole line .
While I am not a Trump fan , and will not/would not be voting for him , I will grant that:
Let's face it , if as many cheap tapers had been around during the adult lives of every president in my lifetime (And before , as well , but anyway .) as now ~ all of them doubtless said something equally vulgar at some time .
Like , for two , notorious pu**y hounds JFK and LBJ ? (ANY politician not too old , probably , really ~ any such person would likely be a Type 1 personality , all the way .)
However , that said (And I didn't hear about it til' I sat down in front of the computer to-day , no TV or even radio or access to one :( , remember .) - Hee hee hee ! !! !! !! !! !!
And he said it in a conversation with a BUSH , so he can't exactly " blame the liberal media " :P ! (You will remember , he said that debate moderator who is in fact a registered Republican was a Democrat and biased agin 'im  )

Sexual assault is a criminal action (eg Trump). Using a crude word is not (Obama). You are drawing too long a bow NurseAngela, if you are implying that one is as bad as the other. Anyone can see they are not comparable. You are doing your preferred candidate no favours in trying to make an extremist comparison.

How are you supposed to know about gaffless Michael, Larry Sinclair, et all, and be offended by a bathroom word.

Yeah, Obama reading an excerpt from his book containing a quote from someone talking about Malcolm X where he used the word p**** is morally equivalent to Trump caught on tape discussing how he violated women. Excellent work, nurseangela! Go Trump, Go Trump!

Yes. Epic fail Nurse.

But on the other hand:

Lyndon Johnson once said "I never really trust a man until I have his pecker in my pocket."

So...there ya go!

A Democrat bragging about homosexual molestation! :D

It was an apt analogy.

They're not called mothers, aunties, sisters, and daughters. Did you hear him use those words? They're not being called women, or even feminine. They're being called p*ssy.

Ideologues are brought to tears, when one partisan is vulgar. Literal tears.

But, not when another partisan is vulgar.

It's like the left hand can grab it, but not the right.

More like "what's good for the goose is bad for the gander, and what's bad for the gander is good for the goose".

Obama was reading the words of someone else, quoting a book about Malcolm X I believe. So the words aren't even his own. Trump bragged about how he likes to sexually assault women and no one stops him.

The problem is not the usage of the word "p****", it's the bragging about sexual assault. The fact that some people can't understand the vital difference is scary.

So, you want your candidate to be on the same level as the people you hate?

Malcolm X would have despised Obama. He wasn't a fool.

Obama was reading from his book, whereas Trump was bragging about making unwanted advances toward a far from receptive woman. The only thing the two incidents have in common is that both had used the slang term for female genitalia. Otherwise, there is no similarity at all.
