The decision by Mr. Obama rescued Ms. Manning, who twice tried to kill herself last year, from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated at the men’s military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. She has been jailed for nearly seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in the United States for a leak conviction.
At the same time that Mr. Obama commuted the sentence of Ms. Manning, a low-ranking enlisted soldier at the time of her leaks, he also pardoned Gen. James E. Cartwright, the former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who pleaded guilty to lying about his conversations with reporters to F.B.I. agents investigating a leak of classified information about cyberattacks on Iran’s nuclear program.
The two acts of clemency amounted to a remarkable final step for a president whose administration carried out an unprecedented criminal crackdown on leaks of government secrets. Depending on how they are counted, the Obama administration has prosecuted either nine or 10 such cases, more than were charged under all previous presidencies combined.
At least Obama rights at least one wrong before leaving office, 35 years was such a cruel sentence and they threatening even more. Manning broke protocol and technically the law but whistleblowers have to be protected or else the corruption will overtake everything. Some of you might be interesting in knowing Chelsea apparently is one of us being diagnosed with Asperger's.
WikiLeaks made the announcement on Twitter and remained adamant that the Department of Justice case against Assange was unconstitutional.
Interestingly Julian Assange offered to give himself up to extradition to the US, it wasn't a pardon but rather just a commuted sentence so he's got a little wiggle room. He's been living as essentially a prisoner for years, I think he feels a little better with Trump in office than Hillary who wanted him dead. Assange would be a martyr, it would be a huge mistake to try to prosecute him who is not even an American citizen for exposing our secrets.
That is interesting and makes a kind of sense. I agree with you about the disproportionate sentence and whistleblower protections.

Something we agree on Jacoby. The leaked video of a U.S. helicopter massacring civilians still gives me shivers. Have you heard of Sergei Magnitsky?

For once you do not agree with Trump: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/donald-trump-troubled-obama-chelsea-manning-commutation-article-1.2949501

I don't believe Trump has commented on it publicly but I don't agree with him or his team on everything, I think it would be a bit hypocritical on my part not to wholeheartedly support the Wikileaks whistleblowers given how important I think their works was in defeating Hillary and status quo forces in our government. Now it is confusing what Obama's angle is, it is his administration that has led an unprecedented effort against leaks, are having a total meltdown over it right now, and were the people that put Manning behind bars for 35 years to begin with. Regardless it is just and humanitarian thing to do whatever the ulterior motives may be. I also support Julian Assange and Edward Snowden in addition to Chelsea Manning, they are all very brave individuals who have sacrificed their freedom for our own. The Obama administration doesn't really have a leg to stand on when it comes to these leaks considering they themselves have politicized our intelligence agencies and have had them leak pure garbage.

I'm curious as to why so many people still believe Assange has AS. It's interesting that Manning herself has AS, but the possibility of Assange having AS could be an indication that he recruited Manning after learning about her having AS.

As Assange is extremely worldly about internet use, along with manipulating individuals and whole blocks of people, my opinion is that he's the furthest thing from being an Aspie.

I agree. Assange likely manipulated Manning into thinking she could become the new Edward Snowden by selling him all that classified information that she did to WikiLeaks.

Why because you guys hate Assange out of some grudge about exposing Hillary's corruption? Manning passed the information years before Edward Snowden did what he did. Assange, Manning, and Snowden should all be honored altho it seems like leftists only care about Manning because she is transgendered. Whistleblowers need protection!

As you conservatives were calling for the execution of all three prior to Assange's attack on Clinton, I'd wager the only reason why you people are all for them now is because of the job done on Clinton. And definitely, the fact that Manning is trans is reason for why so many conservatives wanted her to die in prison.

Hillary wanted all three killed. I have always supported Manning, Assange, and Snowden. I am very grateful to Assange for exposing the Clinton's as being exactly who I thought they were.

Well, most conservatives didn't agree with you till recently.
And what proof is there that Clinton wanted to kill all three?

That they do, whistle blower treatment in America is still "decent" compared to other countries though such as Russia. The whistle blower Sergei Magnitsky for example was arrested for whistle blowing about officials in Putins government stealing millions of dollars from the government, beaten to death in prison by government officials with a blunt force object after 11 months in 2009, and then falsely convicted postmortem of stealing money himself from the Russian Government in 2013. Putin himself lied to the public and said Magnitsky died of a "heartattack" I dunno why some people want to be friends with Russia. They're corrupt as hell.

Also this happened in 2013 as well:
