America's wealthy are fleeing the cities, and even the country, because of a widespread belief in the country's imminent collapse.

What do they know that we don't? Maybe it's time for the little guy to do what he can to prepare too?

As for preparation, who knows. Get to a safe area that you don't think would get targeted, I guess, and that would have food and shelter and understanding people around.

This is a private security guard at a luxury condo built into a former nuclear missile silo (from the OP article):

I thought everyone knew about the Zombie Apocalypse by now.

After the fall of civilization, the place belongs to the guards, not the "owners" if there is no court system backing up the title, the man with the AR and body armor owns it all.

That guard is left-handed.

It's part of the scam they've been cooking for decades. Sabotage the country for profits and such and then get out and/or get under once the whole thing implodes. Escape with all the wealth, food, water, supplies, etc.

I haven't read the classic apocalypse novel Lucifer's Hammer, where a big comet smashes into earth, but somebody once said that a character in that novel is a rich man who builds a luxury bunker so he can survive the comet. After the hit, he manages to get to his bunker...and is immediately shot and killed by the guards he hired to be the caretakers of the bunker until he could use it. All these Silicon Valley titans who think they will just hop in their Gulfstream jets and fly to New Zealand after the crash don't seem to realize that their pilots will be very reluctant to leave their own families behind to fly the billionaires to safety. A few have their own pilot's licenses, so they'll largely be fine in that regard. But the rest probably won't make it to the main airport in SV, which is near downtown San Jose in an area with a lot of very rough people. The people who think they will use motorcycles apparently don't mind leaving their own families to the mobs.

I dunno if there will be a nuke war. If the whole world suddenly kicks America out of its bases, then it's pretty much over for our global power status. As for domestic disintegration, it wasn't immediate alongside the loss of global power for the British and Spanish empires at least. Britain took several decades to splinter, and Spain never really came unglued despite the best efforts of the Basques and Catalans. There eventually was a civil war in Spain, but in the end the military regime wound up dirt poor and unable to affect anything outside its borders.

Galtung didn't say anything about a nuke war. As for domestic disintegration, I think it's very possible, given the deepening faultlines in domestic society as mentioned in the article. The big one I think is the increasing discrepancy between the ideal of the American dream and the reality as experienced by ordinary Americans. The American dream ideal is one of this country's most important unifying ethos.

Maybe the rich are just more paranoid because they have the farthest to fall if something does go wrong, and they have the money to waste on preparing for things that might never happen.

Well, let's put bear traps all over the properties of the rich, so they will be physically incapable of going anywhere.

Start with the Clintons. Then move on to the Gates'. Don't forget folks like De Niro and Springsteen. Oh and Hillary's pal George Soros.

Oh, if they try to leave the country high and dry, you bet I'll bear trap them all, along with the Koch brothers (except for the gay, artsy one you never hear about, as he's cool), Trump, and all those billionaires he wants on his cabinet, as well as many others..
