The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have just released data of the number of births in the United States and they found that under 4 million babies were born in 2017, putting the birth rate at 1.7 births per woman. They found that women in their 40s are having babies while teenagers and young adults are not. I think the birth rate is low for several reasons. One of the reasons is that the cost of living is so high. Most young adults today can barely support themselves let alone a family. Young people are more focused on a career than having kids. Fewer millennials are getting married. Most young people have a pessimistic outlook on the future of the world that they don't want to bring more suffering here. Economists say that a low birth rate is bad for the economy because there will be an aging population and fewer young people to fulfill the jobs to support the elderly.

I agree with the above. Americans are having less sex than in recent past and despite the hookup culture associated with Millennials they have less sex than previous generations. One has to be "in the mood" and today American life be it political, social is more stressful, with more multitasking, the 9 to 5 jobs with weekends off are long gone so who has time to get it on.

And we do not know the effect of #MeToo and campus consent codes have and will have.

Interesting, and probably true, but the amount of sex people have has nothing to do with the birth rate.

Millennials have 1.5 trillion + student debt to pay off first.

Nothing? Less sex, less chance for pregnancy accidental or planned. The reasons why millennials are having less sex overlap with the reasons lower birth rates.

Could also be a result of rising obesity rates changing male hormones and making them less able to even have sex.

But I'd be MOST of it has to do with not wanting to bring a child into Trump's America. I know I wouldn't.

I think one reason is that childcare is extremely expensive, and the US is behind other countries in that we don't provide maternity or paternity leave. Also, even with low unemployment, there really is no such thing as job security as the threat of layoffs might cause people to delay having children they wouldn't be able to fully support without their job. In many areas, the cost of living is so high, people need 2 incomes to provide for the basics. With student loans that millenials are paying back, they also don't want to go into more debt from having a child.

In the months after the election, women were getting IUD's at an increased rate due to fears of losing access to low cost and reliable birth control during Trump's administration, especially if he were impeached and Pence took over. It's been viewed as Pence proofing one's uterus since the copper IUD lasts up to 10-12 years.

Who wants to have kids when things are so expensive now. The reasons why all the kids are messed up now is because people who have them shouldn't have. Both parents gotta work everyday which leaves the kid to basically raise themselves. This is why you have these crusty kids up here spewing profanities on Fortnite and CoD like its going out of style ... Either raise your kids, or don't have them. Too much liability in this day and age with nothing in return.
