Russian trolls fueled anti-vaccination debate in U.S. by spreading misinformation on Twitter, study finds

Quote:
Russian Twitter trolls have attempted to fuel the anti-vaccination debate in the U.S., posting about the issue far more than the average Twitter user last year, a study out of George Washington University has found. The "sophisticated" bots shared opinions from both sides of the anti-vaxxer debate, which took the U.S. by storm and prompted tech companies to crack down on the spread of misinformation surrounding vaccinations.

In the study, professor David Broniatowski and his colleagues say the Russian trolls' efforts mimic those used in the past. Such trolls ramp up controversial issues in the U.S. by inflating different viewpoints, the study says.

I could say I'm surprised by the Russians sowing division among Americans on this issue, but that would be a lie.

Russians need to be banned from the internet.

All those from other countries trolling and trying to influence Americans are welcome to continue.

What other country is waging covert cyber warfare against America?

There's lots of people from other countries obviously trolling and trying to influence Americans. As for how many are doing so covertly or whatever else, that's hard to say since it seems only Russians are being scrutinized. As for those in other countries trolling and influencing Americans being hostile towards America, there are many. But only Russians are problem. All others are okiedokie

The only country other than Russia influencing American politics is possibly China, but I have yet to see anything close to what Putin did.
Sure, there are people in other countries who express their opinions, but they're hardly part of some grand intelligence scheme to undermine American democracy.
If it's provable that any other country is directing intelligence operations against the US, then actions should be taken against them, too. And even if true, that hardly makes what the Russians did any less reprehensible.
Why do you want to excuse the Russians?

There are many people from other countries putting out political memes and tweets etc aimed at Americans, and Americans are being trolled and influenced by that as much as what Russians are putting out. Why are you excusing others who are trolling and influencing Americans? There are plenty of cyber bad guys and nefarious organizations operating in other countries.

Probably every country that can is using the internet to influence America. And we do the same.

There is a significant difference between the actions of individuals and the actions of governments. And I have seen no evidence that anyone else has meant to cause so much damage to our society as Russia did with their cyber warfare. That's what makes what the Russians did so much worse.

So that makes it okay for everyone else?

I'd rather they didn't. But I also would prefer people not to drive drunk, but it's still preferable to drive drunk and not kill people to driving drunk and killing said people. Bad example, I know.
Anyhow, those others are not doing the same harm as Russia. Just because others have done it doesn't justify Russia getting away with it, for reasons already stated.

It's not a matter of justifying Russia, it's a matter of it not being acknowledged that trolling and attempting to influence Americans comes out of other countries, which it does.
