Intel reports going back to January warned of coronavirus threat

Quote:
The intelligence community was warning of the danger posed by the novel coronavirus throughout January and February as the White House downplayed the threat and was slow to roll out nationwide measures, reports show.

U.S. officials familiar with spy agency reporting told The Washington Post that the reports did not clarify when the virus might spread in the U.S. or recommend specific steps to prevent an outbreak, but they did track the international spread of the coronavirus and warn that China was initially dismissing the seriousness of what is now a pandemic.

While President Trump did take early action to close the border to any travelers from China, where the coronavirus first appeared, the White House was slow to make test kits available and ceded much of the response to state governments.

Intelligence agencies “have been warning on this since January,” a U.S. official who had access to intelligence reporting told the Post. “Donald Trump may not have been expecting this, but a lot of other people in the government were — they just couldn’t get him to do anything about it.”

The White House has defended the president’s response, dismissing claims that the administration was caught flat-footed and insisting that Trump took early and significant action.

“President Trump has taken historic, aggressive measures to protect the health, wealth and safety of the American people — and did so while the media and Democrats chose to only focus on the stupid politics of a sham illegitimate impeachment,” Hogan Gidley said in a statement to the Post. “It’s more than disgusting, despicable and disgraceful for cowardly unnamed sources to attempt to rewrite history — it’s a clear threat to this great country.”

I remember everybody in 2016 talking about how horrible he is. Made me think at the time that something crazy might happen with him as president and here we are.

I read that he suffers from mysophobia, the irrational fear of germs, so I find this very baffling along with everything else.

As I said he looks after himself. So long as he's protected I doubt he cared about emergency protocols that should have been in place (although he's done a better job than our Australian prime minister in closing borders).

Trump's misinformation is resulting in unnecessary deaths

It would be correct to classify him criminally insane to protect the vulnerable public

In related news trump wants to re-open US borders and remove social distancing regulations in time for Easter has been criticised by doctors warning it might lead to the deaths of millions.

The original plan was to shut down for 15 days for the incubation period.

The experts were saying millions might die from other pandemics as well. That is what they always say. But the keywords are "might" and "could" and "possibly" etc.

And of course with the rabid trump haters virtually any course of action he takes will be viewed as completely unsatisfactory, wrong, dangerous, reckless, selfish, too little, too much etc.

The US medical establishment have said re-opening the borders and removing social distance is unwise....but then again Americans aren't that wise these days....since about 2016

They probably said similar things in 2009. There is a risk involved. But if everything stays shut down until there is zero risk, there will be catastrophic ramifications. Ones that will have the most detrimental effects on the poor, the working class, minorities etc.

But I imagine there are many who hope a prolonged shutdown will create the USSR - the United States Socialist Republic. Where everyone's income is through and completely regulated by the government.

I realise that there are a number of people who lack the intellectual capacity to see beyond "Orange man bad", but it would be nice if these people could try to rein in their pavlovian impulse to comment along those types of lines where they do not even live within the country they are commenting on.

As far as I understand, the current President has said he would like to see people able to return to work by Easter...The implication being taken by some (being the most extreme option able to be inferred) was that everyone, regardless of the situation where they live, would be expected to be returning to work, even if their area still had a large number of cases occurring.

To a person with even a modicum of common sense, however, this lack of specificity would show that he did not expect (nor intend) the entire country to be able to relax social distancing, etc. and so the entire country be able to return to previous conditions.

What could be seen (from an objective point of view) is that there will be areas where few, if any cases of this virus occur. In these areas, there is little reason for the community to be expected to stay away from their previous workplaces. Yes, there are some places (generally the larger cities) where this will not be possible, but how does anyone benefit from having people who live in smaller towns and cities where this virus has not spread being forced to shut down and remain socially isolated? If there are no cases in an area now (with everything closed down) and still no cases in 2 weeks, why shouldn't the people in that area be permitted to return to work, slowly bring the country's economy back online?

I will say, though, that you had me smiling at your mentioning that he wanted to open the borders and it being unwise...After complaining about him wanting to build a wall to close them in the past.

Trump is a thoughtless, careless airhead who just didn't take the virus seriously. Plus, as he dismantled the mechanisms left by Obama to handle a pandemic shows how he is only interested in erasing his predecessor's accomplishments in order to magnify his own. This alone makes Trump the most dangerous, incompetent man ever to sit in the White House. If that means I'm saying, orange man bad, then so be it.
