This virus is not remotely close to the black plague.
Correct.
The black plague was a horrible thing.
This Corona virus seems to be more severe than the Hong Kong flu, but not as lethal as the Spanish Flu.
Which puts it in the realm of "A very nasty flu" but not the nastiest virus we've ever seen.
(Yes I know it's not an influenza virus, I'm talking about the severity of it's attack on he human body, not which family of viruses it belongs to)
I would rate the threat level as
"You can't afford be silly and blazee about this, but you should not panic either."
Even the majority of people 80 and over who catch this, wont die from it.
At the same time possibly up to 15% of them will, so for their sake, we should not be blazee about it(and for our own sakes too, it's in the ballpark of a very nasty flu, so it's definately worth not catching it if you can.

Yes, yes you could be one of the lucky ones who are asymptomatic, or you could be one of the other ones who spend 5 days flat on their back, feeling utterly horrid.
So in brief.
Keep calm.
Wash your hands.
Wear a mask if you've got one.
Don't mingle pointlessly.
Don't drink from other peoples cups.
Don't touch your face with unwashed hands.
Don't kiss people on the cheek and lips and shake their hands.
If you're above the age of 70, ask the grandkids to do your shopping for you and STAY HOME until the worst of it passes.
(Don't vegetate, buy some weights, do aerobics, take up gardening, knitting, or homebrewing your own hand sanitizer

)
and
Carry on.
I think that's the most responsible course of action. At least with what we know so far.
