Australia just months away from coronavirus vaccine roll out

Quote:
24/12/2020|2min

Australia is just months away from rolling out a vaccine for coronavirus after a deal was confirmed with logistic companies in relation to how the vaccine will be distributed.

DHL and Linfox have been engaged to distribute the vaccine around the country – including in remote areas – after which a digital security firm will track who has had a vaccine and monitor any adverse effects.

PwC has also partnered with the health department to offer additional support.

Healthcare workers and the elderly will be first priority with the vaccine set to be rolled out in March.

Seems to be a mismatch with the government's intention to distribute vaccine shots via GPs and the fact the vaccine needs to be stored at sub-zero temperatures in liquid nitrogen?

Any solutions?

Why do you think it will take longer for people in Australia to receive
the vaccine than people here in the US? :?

Not sure.
Partly because we have the virus under control and we don't need to rush/take-short-cuts.
Supply may be another reason.

I hope it is handled better in Australia than it has been in the UK.

At present here the Government are pressuring Doctors to give follow-up jabs after 12 weeks instead of the recommended 3 weeks, and also to "mix and match" different vaccines. This despite the fact no-one knows what the outcomes of that will be, because those options haven't been tested, let alone approved by the drugs companies.

It's a farce.

Your right, Australia is not even showing up on the leader board. Refer to COVID-19 vaccine tracker: How many people in Canada have received shots?

Which vaccine(s) is Australia pursuing? As far as I know, only the Pfizer vaccine requires cryogenically cold storage.

We had our hopes on the UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND vaccine which had a robust reaction to the COVID-19 antigen/strain in Australia and could be stored at room temp. Unfortunately one problem was that some of the participants in the clinical trial developed a positive reaction to the HIV virus. This false positive for HIV mean't it was scrapped.

There are three other trials going on but unlike the UQ vaccine they need to be stored in cryogenic conditions which is a problem for distribution so could delay roll out even further.

It sounds like Australia needs a stop gap measure. A different interim strategy.

No time frame announced but there is an expectation at least one of the three vaccines, awaiting approval from the TGA, will be rolled out in the first quarter of 2021
